Hi all , I’m flying for the 1st time from I had an ICD put in & was looking for some advice/tips regarding airport scanners etc & how you’re generally treated when you show them your card ? It’s only a short flight from Belfast to Gatwick & back for a few days break

I had an ICD fitted in 2019 and have travelled to US and Europe without problems. I generally have my card in one hand and point to my heart with the other. All security staff have been accommodating and knowledgeable of implants. Just be prepared to take off your shoes and go through a different scanner to everyone else. Have a good trip

Hi I have had no problems at all. You don't even need to show the card. Just tell them you have an ICD. You'll have to remove your shoes and be prepared to be frisked the old way but not a problem.Remember not to use the travelators.

Hi MDR1, have flown a few times with an icd pre lockdown. Am planning to start again next year. Why avoid the travelators? Do they emit electromagnetic fields?

No we can't as they have strong magnets which would interfere with the ICD. But escalators are fine.

I've flown to Belfast, Europe and The USA and have never had any issues.I always present my card which I carry in my wallet.

Usually, I'm taken to one side and frisked. A couple of times I've stood in the 'plastic tube' but never been through the metal detector.

Everyone seems to be familiar with us ICD folk.

Enjoy your travels.

Its not a problem, you need to show security your card before you go through the scanners. You can go through the new body scanners but you can't go through the older machines. They normally ask you to stand aside until one of the team can perform a more manual search. Its quite normal

Hi I just showed my card and I had no problems anywhere. I always meant to get a photocopy of the card I didn't and I lost it at Belfast airport it caused all sorts of problems including getting shouted at by security in Spain it was also a lot of hassle to get a new one which took about four months.I so wish I had got it copied. Have a lovely few days away char
