You sound like you may some sort of heart problems, irrespective of how much and how far you can cycle. There are many surprised when they find out out that they have a heart problem when they believed they were fit and healthy, as evidenced by Eriksen the Danish footballer who suffered a heart attack on the pitch during the Euros. But if you do have a heart problem so you should cut down on alcohol consumption, which won't be such a bad thing for your body anyway, for all number of reasons. And if you have a normally high resting BP (above 140/90) you should be seeking treatment either through lifestyle changes or medication, both of which are life time things. Anyway your GP should better understand your health situation as presented, and be able to offer guidance, treatment and medication as required.

Finally, with respect, it would help better to understand your posts if they weren't over-punctuated with full stops.

Thanx. For the input I’m kinda new to typing and love input You auctually. Mentioned some of the stuff I plan to do Will try to write better .thanx

In your shoes, I think it’s normal to be worried, and I know I would be, too. ‘Never used BP pills much’ - does that mean you have a history of high bp and have previously been prescribed medication for it? If so, then taking it as prescribed would seem like a very good idea to me with a bp that high. You mention the ER, so I’m assuming you’re based in the US, or at the very least somewhere that’s not the UK, and that may be a factor in your decision making if you have to pay for treatment, but a bp of above 180/120 (either number exceeding those, it doesn’t have to be both) is a hypertensive crisis and considered to be a medical emergency requiring help. That’s not safe, nor healthy, regardless of whether it’s causing you symptoms - my mum had no symptoms of high bp but was found to be having crises like that by chance two months before she had a heart attack. They put her on bp meds to try and get it down, but she also chose to ignore the crises readings when they happened at home, and didn’t tell anyone. Although the heart attack was mild, when they did the angiogram, they found she had total blockage of a major artery, and we were told it was miracle she hadn’t just dropped down dead. She managed to get away with ‘only’ having 3 stents, instead. Point being, this is not something that can be ignored, and I would personally argue not something to be managed with lifestyle changes and diet alone, although making healthy choices - like cutting out alcohol - would be a very good start.

Sleep apnea is also not something you want to ignore, as that can have multiple knock effects to the heart and our health more generally, not least just general poor quality of sleep, but also in terms of overnight oxygen levels. If your apnea is causing your sats to drop, your internal organs won’t work as effectively and may be getting damaged due to lack of oxygen. Do you use, or have you been assessed to see if there’s a need for, a CPAP or BIPAP machine overnight?

Stopping drinking and getting back on your bike is a bit like how your eyes react when you've been sitting in the dark and the light is switched on. I'd certainly be concerned over that level of blood pressure. You are at serious risk of having a stroke, regardless of what it is doing to your heart. I can well recall my doctor jumping out of his chair when I presented with 220 / 110 on one occasion. That was before he prescribed me blood pressure medication.

It looks like you need to do two things.... gently ease yourself back into an exercise regime and maintain some level of fitness throughout the year and get a review of your health situation undertaken by a medical professional. And if you are prescribed medication, do take it. I wasn't a fan of taking pills, but without them I'd probably not be here right now. 😀

There's no need to beat yourself up about needing medication. It's a part of a modern stressful life. I quite happily take my 6 pills in the morning with my breakfast, then forget about it all and get on with my day. I don't feel any less valued as a human being than anyone that has no health issues. Keeping positive about your situation always helps. 😀

Hi - I just randomly took my BP last week 200/170 !! 3 times further and it was still rising !! 111 said they’d sent and ambulance !! So off to A&E where I blew the cuff off my arm with a BP up to 240 /180 ! But….. I felt fine if a little freaked !! I was admitted - monitored and meds changed and BP appears now under control . Like you I m fit and active I don’t drink , no caffeine no meat aged 62 !! I had AVR in December and have recovered really well had gone back to work and feeling tip top !

So no explanation for this ?

Is it the stress of the returning to work - I only do 2 days ? It’s not stressful ?

It was a mysterious event but had I not just randomly taken it I may never have known ?

(Fate ? Internal awareness?)

I can’t take my Bp every day that way lies craziness I just do it occasionally- and now a week later it’s at a very good level ? 126/60 !!

Further Investigations ahead (I have an MRI in 2 weeks . ) if you freak out it’s going to rise so I try hard not to stress - I feel great !! have recovered so well from my heart surgery , I won’t allow this blip to wobble me !!

I know this doesn’t explain your experience but it just shows that these things happen

The beat goes on !!

Good luck
