Restenosis

Never heard of this until 2 of my stents were found to have renarrowed after 2 years and I had another PCI last week using different balloons to re-expand the stents.

Anyone else had this experience? Does it keep happening? should I be really worried about what I thought was a stable future?

also my Procedure report mention "ISR" several times - what is ISR?

It’s the gradual re-narrowing of a stented coronary artery. Apparently!I’ve had one re-done. I think you may have been slightly unlucky. Cardio told me it’s most likely to occur up to 2 years after stents. She also said it’s rare.

I don't think it's that uncommon, and yes, I worry about it, probably too much. At age 54, I'm certain I haven't seen the last of my heart/artery issues, unfortunately, but I at least know the signs and and what tests to seek out now...

Ah its fairly uncommon and usually another part of your artery that gets blocked especially after 2 years.

This study says 5-10% even with drug-eluding stents. Maybe I'm reading it wrong. That seems pretty common to me. ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161....

Correct for the first 3 to 9 months after insertion, after that its minimal. Anyone with heart disease with or without a heart attack have a much higher chance of heart problems no matter what way you look at it.

That study you put up was published in 2011. A lot has changed since then.

Hi, In 2002 I had 2 stents both of which restenosed within a year and has to be redone with drug eluting stents. I've had no restenosis of those stents in the twenty years since. I hope this is reassuring. I have had more stents due to blockages elsewhere, but this is due to having familial hypercholesterolneamia not to any failure of existing stents. None of the five additional stents, the last two being in 2020, have been a problem. I was told by the team inserting the last two stents that modern stents have a very low rate of restenosis. With a good diet, exercise and cholesterol control you can face the future with confidence. Sorry I can't help you as to the meaning of ISR.
