I'd been on a PPI (omeprazole) for years because of ulcers. When I started getting chest pains, breathless etc and ended up having an angiogram, then put on meds for angina which included water soluble aspirin, I raised my concerns with the GP and the effect it might have, so she put me on Lansoprazole instead and increased the strength.

I've had no problems at all since.

Before taking a PPI, MY oesophagus and throat were on fire almost constantly

Thank you, that’s exactly how I am feeling and have been since started new meds. There are certainly some options there I can pursue with GP if coated doesn’t work. It’s horrible can’t relax.

Sometimes, you have to point the doctor in the right direction and make them think it was their idea 😂As for things to avoid eating, for me it's tomato based food and tomato ketch up is an absolute no!

But at the start, I did rely on such things as Gaviscon for instant relief, but that's a temporary fix of course.

I understand that gastric system ulcers are often caused by a bacterium called helicobacter pylori, as discovered by an Australian medic in the 1980s, much to the scepticism of medical world at the time, although the theory proved to be correct. Some people have it in their digestive system, others don't. There is a simple blood test which confirms it one way or another. I found out about it after stomach bleeds, and if you have it like I did, you are (or were) prescribed a cocktail of a PPI and an antibiotic which usually eliminates it from your system. If you have not discussed it with your GP it might be worth it.

I remember it well and the controversy at the time.I was tested by a simple finger prick blood test but negative.

I think my lifestyle had a lot to do with my problems 🎉🎈🍾🍷🙄

As a result, I stopped smoking and drinking overnight.

The effects of stopping both together caused more problems temporarily but I've not touched either for about 27 years.

Best thing I ever did 👍

I was told to take aspirin but came off it off my own accord because it rubbed the esomeprazole up the wrong way..Haven't had a heart attack tho they decided..Still waiting for MRI results

Thats unusual, most people take "coated" aspirin that doesn't fully disolve in the stomach.

And taking aspirin after food, seems to really help.

When I first started taking them I would burp violently all day. Really really important to line your stomach well before taking them. I hated breakfast but now force myself to have porridge most mornings now.

Surely you could take Aspirin after a meal that you do enjoy? I hate porridge.

in reply toBurpyBurp

Yes the burping is epic proportions 🤭

Ensure you always take the asprin’embedded’ in emulsified food like a poached egg or similar breakfast. Not on empty stomach or with acid such as orange juice / fruit etc

in reply toPeterpPiper

That’s helpful I have small breakfast due to early start so may take a little later when I have my proper breakfast! I’ll “bury it” within a bowl of porridge! I don’t mind porridge! Note mind not like 😁

Hi. I take omeprazole to counter these possible effects of aspirin. I didn’t want to take it because I have chronic gastritis but I’m ok with the dissolvable aspirin. Just a thought. Good luck!

in reply toHarefieldfan

Thank you, I feel more informed regards options if persists and tips on how to take. Kind of you all to take the time, much appreciated.

Ask your doctor if you can get some Omeprazol, one a day will stop the reflux effect. There are also aspirin products available that have a built in stomach protector they are called Adiro in Spain, made by Bayer in 10MG

in reply toSimonrainbow

Yes I will look into that. When I was a child I’d get terrible stomach ache and vomiting and they worked out it was the fizzy drinks I was having to excess (a loving but overindulgent mum). Never touched it again since. So could be connected or clutching at straws! Thank you

Apart from PPIs for reflux disease I take 75mg aspirin following an NSTEMI and since I have coronary heart disease. I take the gastro resistant coated type, since I have had unrelated problems with stomach bleeds in the past. You should ask your GP to prescribe those rather than the standard type of aspirin, to see if that cures your problem. There may be some resistance, as I found, because the gastro coated type costs the NHS a few pence more, but persist like I did . But if you are unable to get your GP to cooperate they are inexpensive and can be bought over the counter e.g. Boots £1.79 for 28tabs.

It puts in perspective what I’m feeling when people like yourself share your far more difficult health issues but helps newer people like me feel more hopeful that there are options. yes I’ve now got myself some gastro resistant tablets enteric coated From Asda £1 for 28. Took first one today, see how things go.

I could not tolerate Aspirin, either, Your description like being on fire inside, sounds very familiar. I had to stop it immediately. Consult your doctor and decide on next step, but do it soon
