Insurance for living in Spain

Hi, I had an Aortic valve replaced around four years ago. I am now considering moving to Spain. Does anyone know of an insurance company which will cover me?

Many thanks.

I don't but if the intention is to live there would you not have to pay into one of their health care insurances?

Yes, intention is to live there. I think I need private insurance for at least a year, from a Spanish company. Not sure which one will cover me.

Hi LM,

All depends on the visa type you go for but in reality post Brexit you are going to need private medical insurance for all your time, I think its unlikely that Spain will allow you to access their Health Service unless you end up paying into the system. If you are retired then this is not likely and I think you can expect to pay insurance the whole time you are there. Don't quote me on it but thats my understanding.

I don't think you will have a problem getting insurance per se, it will be the premium costs vs your disclosed pre existing conditions as per any insurance policy. The one thing I will say is the private system there is amazing, zero waiting times, great doctors and super modern hospitals.

I used to live in Spain and had Sanitas, one of the largest companies but that was prior to my health issues, that was 200 euros a month for my family but that was 15 years ago.

Try IBEX insurance for a broker they will have access to most companies and are well versed in the post Brexit situation.

I used them for years for car and home insurance. English speaking and great customer service.

I intend to go back and live there at some point and will be doing the same. I am expecting it to be expensive however, my hope is that the UK and Spain can agree some kind of trade deal that includes a reciprocal health care and free movement for workers, I believe it has been discussed already due to the sheer volume of British ex pats heading to Spain and the large amount of Spanish that work in the UK.

Thanks for that. I know it isn’t going to be cheap. I will try the insurance companies you mention. Brexit eh? Don’t get me started!

tejadasolicitors.com/blog/h... above is quite a good blog about residence and ensuring you complete an S1, before moving there

Thanks. That is very helpful. My wife can get an S1 but I am a year or so too young. Unless I can count as her dependent?

Good morning LostMoggie. Ref Living in Spain since Brexit. Not sure if you are aware you need 27 thousands to open a Spanish bank account now. And also need extra funds to keep yourself for the 1st 5 years. Also as mentioned you need private medical insurance every year now because pensioners Living there since Brexit don't get free health care paid for by the uk government. Also from what I found out. Private medical insurance will not cover for pre existing medical conditions

Hi, thanks for that. I know it isn’t going to be cheap! I do know that the money in the bank can be the same money, or annual income. Will get more advice. Thanks again.
