Getting prescription drugs in Spain

Hi, has anyone had any experience of buying prescription drugs in Spain?

I’m in Spain for several months and I need to get more bisoprolol.

I retired recently, on 31st August, and I’m travelling with my husband in our camper van. I arranged a 6 month supply of all my drugs with my GP. But a mistake was made on the bisoprolol and I only have a 3 month supply. I don’t want to have to cut my trip short so was wondering if I can get the drug here in Spain and if so how I go about it.

Thank you in advance.

You should be able to buy Bisoprolol at a pharmacy. Pharmacists are highly trained there and near doctor level. Take one of your old boxes with you to show you are on it.

If necessary, you could go to a local GP and get a prescription. I am in France for a lot of time (less now due to Brexit🤬) and I needed supplies so that’s what I did. They don’t allow medication to be sent by post from the U.K. unfortunately. Of course, you have to pay for any pills here or in Spain, but it was easy to get all my medication sorted out.

Hi, I used to live in Spain and found you could buy most drugs that are on prescription in a chemist, if you have an empty Bisoprolol packet take that into your local chemist and try to purchase. If you don't speak Spanish try and find someone who does or try google translate, not the best option but better than nothing and certainly worth a try. Hope this helps.

Thank you

We had a second home in Spain for some 16 years and one of us often made a mistake with not taking enough medication, we never had a problem with buying it in the local pharmacy, sometimes not quite the same strength was available but we were always given guidance....or we phoned our surgery in tbe UK for advice.

You can sometimes arrange to have your prescription sent to a local GP and they will then issue a Spanish prescription to be filled at a local Farmacia. You would obviously need to phone your GP and arrange this with a Spanish GP as well.Otherwise as everyone says take the box into the farmacia

Thank you everyone. I’ve managed to buy some bisoprolol over the counter at a pharmacy. Used my very limited Spanish but was understood so that’s a bonus. Pretty cheap as well, only 2.3 euros.
