Life Insurance

Hi all, so some of you may know that age 44 I had an angiogram after narrowing of my arteries were detected on a CT Angiogram. Was found to have a 90% blockage in my LAD artery so had one stent fitted.

Was told that there is furring in other arteries but cardiologist didn’t stent any other and didn’t say I needed to go back for further stents at this stage.

I turned 45 years of age six days after my angiogram/angioplasty.

You would have thought that being a mum of two young adult children, I’d have got life insurance sorted. Sadly life simply got in the way and it just didn’t happen. I do feel guilty about that.

Trying to rectify it now and did two quotes to find that as I’d listed the angiogram and angioplasty as well as declaring my under active thyroid, I’m uninsurable. However I think the questions read “in the last two years, have you seen a specialist or had any procedures done etc etc”. Of course they were all in November 2021 so maybe that’s why.

Do any of you have any experience of being accepted for a life insurance policy after having these procedures? The thought that I’m uninsurable has surprised me. Yes I was expecting to pay more per month compared to someone my age without these health difficulties but uninsurable? Crikey! Bitter pill to swallow which only makes me feel more guilty that I hadn’t sorted this out over the years that have come before.

Any suggestions here would be most welcome!

Huge thanks, Sal.

I had 7 stents just on four years ago. For the year afterwards no one would insure me. Exeter Friendly then insured me but it is very expensive.

Huge thanks for your response. So you had to wait that passage of time before you could become insured. Then you found it costly. Yes I think I too will have to wait that passage of time too. I’m expecting it to be costly. Just hope it’s costly but affordable. Cheers for responding 👍

Hi SimplySal. I, really feel for you as I am in exactly the same boat. I too have two kids and didn't have life insurance sorted when I had my bypass 2 years ago. When I last looked for insurance it was the same, uninsurable. I was planning to try again however am due a cardio CT in March so that may have an impact. I suspect I, will have to wait until I turn 50 and get a no questions asked policy 🙁. I hope you have better luck finding insurance.

Huge thanks for reaching out. Sorry you found yourself in the same predicament. It’s hard isn’t it that if I’d have applied say last September I would have been accepting but was at more risk of something awful happening to me then (before the stent) than now (after the stent). I could kick myself lol.

Ah well, it is what it is. I think I’m going to have to wait that two years and try again.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing 🥰

Please read the small print on any 'no questions asked' policy. Normally theybreturn your premiums if you die. You are better buying premium bonds.

Thanks, sadly I suspected this would not be a great option.

You could pay a regular sum in to a savings account. That way all your payments will be for you/your children and none will be for the life assurance company. And in a couple of years you could do life assurance if you thought it beneficial.

As an incidental part of my job, I used to “sell” life insurance and the commission was huge. That commission reduced the life insurance.

Best wishes

Colin

Hi Simplysal. I too am now uninsurable. My wife has taken out a separate policy recently. She is healthy with no chronic conditions. However she did have counselling for stress and some time off work last year which she is now better from. Because she declared this Zurich looked into it and her medical records and almost 2 months later have offered her life insurance with a number of exemptions that don’t make sense but kept the payments the same. I’m told independently that insurance companies are massively tightening up following the pandemic. I kind of understand - it’s business - but on the same hand not very helpful. Chris

I’m in the same boat, but my husband & two teenage sons would get death in service benefits from my employer if the worst happened. Let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that! I do think, however, that most insurance companies would massively hike up the premiums or introduce exemption clauses if I’d taken out insurance before.

As Blackcat says put the premium you would have paid into a savings account. I used to have health insurance but stopped it when the premiums reached £500/month because of my age (then 60). I saved the money in a stocks and shares ISA.
