Weight gain and hair loss due to statins

Has anyone else gained weight since taking statins. Also will it cause hair loss. Thanks

Quite a lot of people exhibit quite severe side effects to certain types of Statins, there are a lot of different types that can be prescribed, so my suggestion is to go through the known side effects of the Statin that you have been prescribed to see if what you are experiencing tallies up with the known side effects.

Then armed with this information, you need to go to your GP and express your concerns and request a different type.

I went through 4 different types before we finally arrived at one which worked perfectly for me, but everyone is different.

Hello Fifimyangel. I have had hair loss since I started on my cocktail of heart meds 18 months ago. I blame the Bisoprolol but suppose it could be the Rosuvastatin - or both. Has anybody got any ideas as to how to deal with this?

I don't think anything there is anything that works to increase hair growth but I've found that keeping it really short looks better - not as thin.

Hello, I've been taking high intensity statins for a year and haven't experienced weight gain or hair loss. If anything my hair is fuller than a year ago.

One of the drugs I'm taking has definitely made my hair thinner but I don't know which one. I keep it really short and it doesn't look as thin.

I’ve been taking 40mg atorvastatin for just over a year now and haven’t noticed hair thinning at all. My hair has always been thick but quite fine, and still is. I’ve lost 3 stone due to diet changes and exercise over the last year and had no problems doing this so statins haven’t caused weight gain for me. As someone else said, there are many different statins so if one doesn’t suit you, another one will do hopefully. My cardiologist suggested I shouldn’t read any of the negative press about statins as that would put me off and possibly he thought could cause me to expect side effects. I’d already heard quite a lot about statins so was fairly worried, but as I say, luckily I’ve had no Negative effects other than some nausea initially and tinnitus (which I’ve got used to) BUT I do take 2 other drugs so I’m not sure which one causes these.

Not at all. I actually lost 2 stone after starting all my meds after a heart attack. My hairdresser is complaining how fast my hair grows. Stress can cause hair loss. If you feel sure this is happening, talk to your gp. There are other types of statin.
