Hello, i had a heart attack just before christmas. I like to travel fairly frequently and i am wondering is there any sort of time span that i should consider about between the date of the attack and then actually being able to travel. I appreciate it will also depend on how active i will be as well with regards to walking distances etc.

I had another heath problem that gave rise to concern re travel .My GP was a good advisor. One thing he took into consideration was the destination of travel and whether there was a good hosptal within range!

Dear Thumper-Rabbit

Hard question to answer, but what seems clear, by the question, is that you feel in yourself ready for travelling .

That to me would be the main thing, to feel both physically and emotionally strong enough.

I would run it past your Dr/Heart team first and also to get the papers needed for insurance should your journey be taking you abroad.

Take care and have a great time.

Hello, I'm a frequent traveller. I had an Nstemi HA last February, with 3 stents then and also 3 more in mid April. I went on holiday at the beginning of June (wedding anniversary). Long haul 10 hour flight for 10 days. BUT I could not get health insurance for preexisting condition at that time although my cardiologist said I was fit to fly - all the companies wanted six weeks gap after procedures before being able to get insurance to cover preexisting issues.

When getting insurance it's really important to fill in the medical declaration accurately to ensure you are covered.

Since last August I now have worldwide annual insurance which covers me and my wife including heart issues from staysure for about 375, I have flown 45000 miles in total on 6 trips since my HA with no issues.

So it can be done, but it depends on your condition, your attitude to risk, also consider the medical facilities where you are going /staying and of course make sure you don't forget your medication. I also take my discharge letters and an reference ecg printout with me so if there's an issue then an overseas doctor has immediate information.

It's best to check with your cardiac team as every case is different. But do make sure you have relevant insurance and that you're within reasonable reach of a good hospital. I travelled to SE Asia 3 months after my HA and have carried on travelling since.

Not what you're looking for?
