Ticagrelor (Brilique)

Following a third stenting procedure , and two previous MI's, I have been prescribed Ticagrelor 90mg for one year followed by Ticagrelor 60mg for the rest of my life. This seems contrary to NICE guidelines which say Ticagrelor should be stopped after 3 years. Should I question this with the consultant who prescribed ?

Hello :-)

I presume the consultant will have a reason as to why they have decided you need to be on them for life but of course I would say yes question it

This is our treatment and we can ask any question we need to and should do if we feel unsure

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Always question anything you are not happy with they can get things wrong occasionally

I was under the impression that Ticagrelor would be strictly for 12 months. After my stents I was on 90mg for just 12 months (it was written in capital letters).

A couple of months after it stopped I had a telephone consultation with my cardiologist. I felt well but at times felt as though I was a bit like a car with an old battery - engine cranks slowly but always coughs, starts and runs fine. He put me back on but at the reduced dose of 60mg, strictly for two years.

Hi Jaffas. Are you also on aspirin? Some people who can't tolerate aspirin are put on Ticagrelor (or Clopidogrel) for life instead.

I was put on Ticagrelor after my HA, and it took a pharmacist questioning why I was still on it 18 months later for them to review my meds. I felt a lot more 'normal' after I stopped taking it as the slightest knock woud result in a huge bruise. However, your cardiologist knows best and I would contact him/her to find out why you're being prescribed a lower dose.

I have been prescribed the same regime for Ticagrelor. I don’t think it’s unusual if you have had a heart attack and a family history. You say you’ve had three MIs so sounds a sensible approach (in my humble opinion). Take care

Until October 2021 I had been on Clopidogrel for nearly 4 years and everyone told me that I should only be on it for a year. the pharmacist told me that is usually the case but no reason why it can't be longer. In October after 2 stents were fitted I was put on Brilique 2 x 90 mg a day and aspirin. My prescription states only for 12 months when I will go back on Clopidogrel.I would always ask to speak to a pharmacist in the first instance as they are all about the medication and in many cases know more than a doctor.
