Retained pacing wires

I understand most people having CABG or valve surgery these days have pacing wires connected in case of heart block or Afib after the Op. I have found out that in my case the wires were cut at skin level and retained. However I have read that retaining them in the body can cause problems later on there have been cases of them migrating to right atrium and even the Aorta causing hospitalisation. The NHS website advises they should be removed and if not possible the patient should be notified and case documented in the event of future concerns. Does anyone have any comments or experience of this situation?

My wires were cut at skin level October 2019. Never gave it a thought and still don’t. Would it be DR Google you got this information? I really don’t think experienced cardiologist would do anything to put a patient at risk. Let alone undo all their fantastic work

My pacing wires were the last thing removed before being discharged from hospital. It didn’t hurt just a really weird feeling! I have read here on the forum one member who they couldn’t get one of the wires out and it was cut off at skin level. If this is something that is concerning you give your cardio nurse a ring or even your GP.

I had one safely removed and the other one cut - doctor assured me it wouldn't be a problem and so far, 3 years down the line, it hasn't been, I never think about it

Never heard of them being left in, put apparently its quite common from the comments I read. I had 6 and they were all pulled out a few days after my surgery and my pacemaker was fitted.

Both mine were removed a day before leaving HDU and going to the ward. I can't see how they could migrate into the heart though?

It appears that wires should be left and cut if they don't come out easily as I guess pulling harder could damage the heart. academic.oup.com/icvts/arti...

Mine were removed a week after surgery, whilst I was still in hospital. They did have to tug ; weird feeling. No adverse effect following that. But scars now (post 2 years) still itches & hurts a little sometimes!
