Please don't think I am expecting anyone to play the role as a medical person and if this doesn't improve in the next couple of day I'll contact my GP but I wondered if anyone knows what this is and what would have caused it?
I only noticed it this afternoon and can't remember banging it at all but wondered if is caused by my blood thinners Brilique. I was on Clopidogrel previously.
There is no pain but quite colourful.
As I said I'll leave it a few days and if it doesn't improve I'll seek medical advice.

That's very odd. My husband's fingers started going this colour just recently, though not quite as bad as yours. He's is due to his Reynauds disease but he's is quite painful. It could be due to blood thinners.
I wonder if I did knock it without realising and because of the thinners it has caused a hematoma. As I said I am not too worried as there is no pain and it hasn't spread since lunchtime. Just odd I thought.
I hope your husband's Reynauds disease is being treated and the pain is being managed.
I take apixaban and previously warfarin. I occasionally get something similar which looks like a bruise but haven't banged it. Usually disappears in 24 hours
I just found this on line and I am also taking aspirin which along with the other blood thinner may be the problem!
'Certain blood thinner medications can increase the risk of hematoma formation. People who take medications such as Coumadin (warfarin), Plavix (clopidogrel), aspirin, Persantine (dipyridamole)), or aspirin-containing products (like Alka Seltzer) may develop a hematoma much easier and with less severe injury to their blood vessels than other people. These medications impair the clotting ability of the blood and therefore, minor damage to a blood vessel becomes more difficult to repair, resulting in hematoma formation'
Once I noticed a bruise on my upper arm, but couldn't remember banging it. Then I recalled I'd carried in an armful of logs for the fire and one of the logs must have been digging into me.
Before medication it might have left a small red mark that disappeared within minutes. But heart medication meant it resulted in a bruise.
Hopefully yours will turn out to be something similar and will quickly fade.
Thank you, I am hoping it is 'nothing' too. As you say in days gone by I may have knocked my knuckle and taken no notice I suppose things have changed.
Iβm on Ticagrelor (brillique) and often get bruises in weird places. Backs of fingers and inside wrists are pretty common. I think Iβve narrowed it down to the dogβs lead!
It does sound as if this is the culprit, I was on Clopidogrel for 4 years and no bruising I wonder whether this along with aspirin is going to cause more unexplained bruising. I hope I am not accused of punching anyone!!Thanks for your reply.
I have the same problem. I have my dog on a long lead sometimes and wrap it round my hand. I noticed I was getting bruises on my fingers and backs of my hands. I also get purple mottling on the tops of my legs if I get very cold. I'm on Apixaban.
I would check for an infection just in case as cant be too careful, you may have a tiny crack where bacteria has got in. Easy done with cracked chapped hands in winter.
Having said that i get a similar issue on my fingers with something as simple as pushing a hoover across the carpet or lifting a heavy item. Mine has always been due to my anticoagulant. I am used to it happening extremely regularly like every couple of weeks or so. The bruising fades in a day or so. Hope this helps.
I have studied the finger and it seems in tact, no obvious cuts or breaks in the skin, oddly enough the front of my hand is absolutely normal the bruising is totally to the back of the hand. I could very easily be like you and this could be a regular thing so am going to closely monitor it as long as this bruise goes. Thanks for experience it is looking more and more like the thinners.
I was on Brilique and 75mg aspirin for the first 12 months after my heart attack and was continually covered in bruises without ever recollecting having bumped into anything. I'm now only on the 75mg aspirin, and while I don't bruise much, it still happens. Accidentally bumped my hand at home while cleaning the bathroom last Monday - still got a bruise on the back of my hand!
Thank you, I suppose once you know what it is you can dismiss it. In a years time I will go back onto Clopidogrel and I never had any problems with that,
Bruising, side effects from blood thinners. Sometimes I knock myself, thinking, that will bruise, nothing shows up, other times there is a bruise with no reason. They do get colourful. Frustrating in summer when you can't hide them as well. Take care. Moni
I am on clopidegrel and aspirin and the amount of bruising I now suffer is ridiculous often the slighted knock results in red patches under skin even playing with grandkids can give me injuries never any pain just marks and bruises that are slow to go! And I never know where they come from π
Paroxysmal hand haematoma - have a Google. I once had this and was very alarmed, but it just went on its own. But, as always, it's best to get it checked by a doctor considering you've other heath conditions and are on medications. Let us know what they say.
Oh just to add, I've also additionally had this discoloration once since being on apixaban. I admit I didn't get it checked as I assumed I'd knocked my knuckles and badly bruised myself because of the anticoagulant, even if I couldn't remember doing it!
Thank you all for your very helpful replies, I have woken this morning with just a light discoloration no where near as dramatic as yesterday, I will make a note of this one and see if a pattern forms otherwise I am putting it down to the blood thinners. Thanks again for your replies.
I'm with ASCB, I've had this too, quite alarming at first, mine was a bit sore in the joint, almost felt like a blood clot, but soon went on it's own accord.
Thank you, yes it seems to be that, as I said I had been on Clopidogrel for 4 years and nothing but they have changed now so probably that's effecting things.
Hi Heather, I often get smaller versions of that, mine are caused by a burst blood vessel, it can easily happen when on blood thinners. Iβd get yours checked out as it looks quite severe.
It looks very much like how my fingers/toes sometimes look when my blood vessels burst gp said maybe raynaurds. I also have no pain though I get a burning sensation just before it happens. It sometimes happens when going from warm to cold environments or vice versa. Also in hot water x
Thanks for your reply, I think it is the blood thinners combined with a little knock I need to be aware from now on of even the smallest tap just so I can watch for any subsequent bruising.
My husband is told when he had to go on warfarin, be careful not to bump into things. I used to put a pillow between us in case I accidentally hit him in my sleep. We are more relaxed now, just extra careful when he is using tools or a hedge trimmer. Before he was on warfarin he badly cut his hand, but he is more careful now.
I think I was more concerned about cuts than bruising, I now realise bumps that I dismissed could well turn into a cracking bruise so being more aware.
Hi Heather,From the picture the finger is definitely bruised and a nice hematoma is in situ.
Most likely you must have accidently bang your hand slightly on something as simple as a counter top .The fact that you are also on an anticoagulant makes you very susceptible to slight bruising more frequently.
I would just keep an "eye" on the spread and discoloration.
It should start clearing up in a few days (1 week or so)
Thank you, it is so much better today the bruise has faded to a nice pink colour, it is amazing how quickly it is healing.
Hello
I am on blood thinners and I get some really bad bruisers on my fingers to
Some have been so nasty that I have thought did I bang myself and sometimes we can well I know I do and forget so it could be that as well as the blood thinners you may have banged yourself gone ouch forgot about it but of course it has bruised
Just keep an eye on it and it should go down otherwise as you know already you will contact your Doctor
These blood thinners can make us look like we have been battered can't they ?
I remember when I was in the Hospital and don't ask why but my Husband was trying to comfort me and he started stroking my feet very gently a few minutes later he was calling the Nurse my feet were black
She explained it was the blood thinners and this was something that could happen while on them x
I think there is never a day when I do not see a bruise somewhere on me even though luckily it is rare a get a bad one like in the Hospital or what you have now
I think I bruised more easily on Ticagrelor than Cloppy Dog. Unfortunately the Cloppy had other side effects that meant I had to go back to Tica, but fortunately, I came off them 18 months ago and am just on aspirin (as a blood thinner) now.
