Five months ago my husband had a triple bypass following a heart attack. When he came out of hospital with the usual huge amount of pills his stomach was pretty upset. Certain foods make him gag. Also he found it difficult to tolerate his partial denture.
Things did improve although his taste in food has changed quite dramatically.
The gagging reflex has returned and again he is struggling with his dentures. He has started taking omeprazole again which is helping a bit.
Has anyone suffered similar or can advise us on what’s causing this and what to do to help it. It’s very unpleasant for him and to be honest not great for me either.
Thanks in advance

Hi Jazz, I'm five months in from a HA and having a couple of stents fitted and Ive had all sorts of issues with indigestion and tummy upsets due to the cocktail of medication. I was on 80mg of Atorvastatin, just over a week ago my GP amended that to 40mg of Simvastatin....I've been feeling better by the day.A couple of months ago my GP took me off Omeprazole and put me on Lansoprazole, that also made a difference.
I've never had issues with medication before, but the last few months have made me understand that we all have different acceptance levels of different medications and what suits one doesnt suit all.
I'm a denture wearer and have had no issues with mine.
Have you or your husband spoken to the nurses from his hospital, when I was discharged in the pack they gave me was a number to ring if I had any concerns, I have only phoned them once and I've got to say they were very helpful.
I had similar gastro problems. I was put on Lansoprazole and after 7-8 months the medication was changed to Famotidine which works differently to a Proton pump inhibitor like lansoprazole (oemprazole conflicts with one or more of the meds you may get after a heart attack) also long term use of Lansoprazole can actually cause gastric problems hence the change to famotidine. At the same time atorvastatin was reduced to 40mg from 80mg. The effect was very good. It may be a bit early to reduce the statin. It not only reduces cholesterol but is also is effective in preventing plaque from detaching from artery walls and causing a clot.
It might be worth checking with his dentist. It might be possible to trim the dentures to lessen the gagging reflex. I find this a real problem with a recently acquired set.Soups and soft meals he can eat without chewing might be an occasional help.
He does need to take the stomach protectors all the time. Why did he stop? You should contact his GP right away. I'm allergic to PPIs like Omeprazole and Lansoprazole so I take famotidine.
I take omeprazole twice a day morning and evening before meals and have no problems, but my problems were considerably different 'barretts oesophagus and a hiatus hernia plus a burst ulcer, so doubt my experience is relevant, I do make sure I drink a full glass of water every time as instructed by my better half and the doctor, I was also instructed not to stop taking unless advised by Dr, hope you get sorted
