Stopping naproxen for a pacemaker reposition procedure

I take naproxen for costochondritis , I’ve been taking it since February as part of my treatment for pericarditis and effusion , my cardiologist said he doesn’t want me taking naproxen when I have my pacemaker reposition procedure , originally I requested the procedure after Christmas however I’m waiting to find out how soon I could have the procedure as the pain from my pacemaker is getting much worse very quickly . Does anyone have an approximate idea how long after I stop taking naproxen I’d have to wait for the procedure . Thank you

Naproxen lasts in the body for quite a long time. That's one of its benefits. It looks like before all traces are out of the body is up to 93 hours. The so called half life (the time when half of the drug is eliminated from the body) is up to 17 hours.

Usually NSAIDs have to be stopped a week before surgery. Your GP can prescribe something stronger if Paracetamol alone is inadequate.

Double check but Tramadol should be fine I was taking it up to and after my amputation. I now take Oxy-codone as a PRN as they prefer it for over 60s but you are a few years off that!

Why is the pacemaker causing pain ?

It’s always been uncomfortable which I thought would stop after a while but it’s gradually getting worse , my cardiologist said it could be catching on a muscle so he’s going to put the pm a bit deeper . I’m quite small framed , my mum has always thought the pm was big for me and she asked if they make different sizes of pacemaker .

When mine was first fitted about six years ago it was quite uncomfortable for several months.

Hi Westie, I took naproxen for about 5 years whilst waiting to be “old enough “ to have a full knee replacement finally had the op when I was 51. However by then because i hadn’t been prescribed an antacid with it I ended up with oesophageal corrosion which then caused a hiatus hernia. If your taking naproxen for a prolonged period get your GP to prescribe a daily antacid like lansoprazole.

Good luck

😊
