Hi,

I had Aortic valve replaced and bypass done 5 years ago, my replacement was harvested from my mammary artery. The left side of my chest was numb for coming up 6 months. When I saw my surgeon for my post op check asked about it and he said when they harvest they rip it out! So the nerve endings are trying to join back up and sometimes get it wrong, I used to get the sensation of someone pulling an Elastoplast off! He said once the nerves sort themselves out the numbness would disappear usually takes about 6 months and he was right on the money.

Hope that helps,

Wishing you a great recovery.

Best wishes Pauline

Hi I’m 2 years + & still have numb sometimes tingly chest. I suppose I just live with it now - it’s not a concern just sometimes annoying!

I'm three years post op and still have some muscular pain on the left side of my chest where the muscles attach. In fact I have had (and still have) nerve issues at the harvest sites at my wrist and ankle. Better this than being unwell.

Sounds pretty normal. I had CABG x4 in February this year and still have some numbness and musculoskeletal pain. It's definitely getting better though and doesn't stop me going to the gym etc.

You'll soon be able to massage your scar area with Bio Oil. I found that helps and the feeling is coming back nicely. 8 months post cabg x2.

After I had an abdominal operation the surface of my skin was without feeling for a very long time. IT didn't go deep; just the surface nerves where they'd been cut. It started to return after about 6 months but was around 3 years before i got complete sensation back. Nerves heal very slowly.

Hi Mark. It's perfectly normal I think. My hubby is almost 3 years post quad bypass and still has a slight tingly sensation in the skin on the left side of the chest scar. That's an improvement from numbness all over the chest for 3 months!!!

Nerves take a right battering where they've opened up the chest and where vessels in the leg have been harvested.

I'm sure things will improve in a short while.

All the very best. Jan xx

Coming up to 3 years post CABG x 3 and still have numbness on the left. Nerve runs alongside the mammary artery and gets damaged in the process. Small price to pay!
