My high fat diet reduced my cholesterol by 50%.

Hi,

For anyone who is interested, I've been on 40mg atorvastatin for 4 years which very quickly reduced my LDL cholesterol from 2.1 to 0.9 and has been stable around that figure ever since.

18 months ago I began to adopt a diet much higher in dietary fat and fiber.

I just had a blood test and my LDL was reduced by 50% and down to 0.6.

Please note that the fat and fibre comes from avacado, olive oil, nuts and legumes and not fish and chips πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Wow, great result !

I have been trying to get my head round the high fat low carb diet but failed miserably.

My cholesterol has doubled 😭

Can I ask if you followed a particular plan ?

Hi Ellie, I don't follow a high fat, low carb diet as I do not want to eat a lot of red meat.

I follow more of a Mediterranean diet, low in red meat but very high in fat from olive oil, avacado and nuts but also high in complex carbohydrates mainly from legumes.

I understand the point your making but my intention was not to lower my cholesterol as 0.9 is low enough.

The further reduction is a result of the high fat diet and my post was purely for information.

What side affects did you have with Atorvastatin, if any. I stopped all statins just before lockdown to see if side affects went away. Currently awaiting results from recent blood test to see where my LDL is. Back slid on diet during lockdown so half expecting it to come back high.

Hi,

I had a few muscle aches on atorvastatin 80mg so switched to 40mg with no problems for 4 years but have recently developed a lot of dry skin on my legs which I think might be due to low cholesterol so I'm trying rosuvastatin now as it's water based to see if it makes a difference.

I think that for men the mortality risk is roughly double that of having high cholesterol from 65 years old and above.

I'm 55 and have heart disease so I'll be very happy if I can make it to 65 and die of high cholesterol so I'll keep on with the statins as I believe they are very important for my condition 😊😊
