Gout pain relief

I have had gout for about a month. It started as usual in the big toe joint of my right foot. It was starting to go, when it appeared in my left foot too. It then appeared in my right wrist. This has swollen quite badly and the pain is the worst that I have ever had from gout. Because of my heart issues, I’m not allowed the usual anti-inflammatory meds. My gp put me on three times a day colchicine 50mg. I started this yesterday afternoon. Nothing has happened yet. I have had four doses. My wrist is extremely painful. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

I have gout as well. But the meds keep it at bay most of the time.

I had gout a few years back which was originally treat with cochicine, and took a few days to work its way through. The gout was diagnosed as being due to my kidneys not breaking down the uric acid.

The GP quickly changed the Meds to Allopurinal which I understand is used for gout long-term. Since being on Allopurinal I've not had gout since.

Urgh. I hate gout with a flaming passion. Colchicine might take a little while to make a difference, I think it also depends at what stage of your gout attack you started taking it.Do you know what causes it? For me it was my diuretic, the GP switched my furosemide for eplerenone and I've not had any flare up since. It might be worth exploring the cause in order to reduce your suffering.

Hi there. I have no idea what caused the flare up, or why it behaved in such a strange way. One foot for three plus weeks. Then it started to get better. It’s now 75% back to normal on my right foot. Then last Saturday, I woke up with it in my left foot quite badly, and worse of all my right wrist and thumb. This is agony. I have never had gout anywhere apart from my right foot. I’ve had gout off and on for at least twenty years. Originally I think it was started by the vast amounts of Diet cola that I drank. The only thing this time is I’ve been on Lansoprazole higher level for a couple of weeks. But I don’t think that is the cause. Thank you for replying, and thanks to the others that have replied too.

Hi there. I have psuedogout, which extreme pain is the same as gout. The gout pain nowadays travels from joint to joint in attacks. A few weeks back it started in the right shoulder, which I have never had before only in hands, wrists and knees. The gout attack travelled from the shoulder to the right hand and wrist and they became very swollen. I was hospitalised last year with a septic attack of gout in my left knee. The attacks are getting more frequent. I tried colchicine which worked, a few weeks ago, but gave me terrible diarrhoea and feeling very sick for a day but the pain subsided and disappeared after 2 days. As you say, the pain is horrendous. I’ve never experienced such pain. I had to call out paramedics for pain management a few weeks back. Three weeks have passed since that attack and now gout pain has started up again in my right shoulder. I’ve applied strong 10% gel but it just soothes the pain, so tomorrow I’ll have to take the colchicine. The hospital consultant told me to drink lots and lots of water to fend off further attacks. So I’m doing that rather than drinking fizzy drinks, tea or coffee, which I had been doing as I love my coffee and tea, but they will be off limits from now.

Thank you for replying. It looks like you have had an horrendous time with Psuedogout. I’ve only ever had gout in my feet, and now in my right wrist and hand. That was enough. I’ve just finished a second course of colchicine. The swelling has gone down, but still some mild residual pain. My GP is talking about a regular med to stop the attacks from happening. The gout is horrible. It’s not as bad as raging toothache, but comes a close second. I’ve been told that the aspirin that I take every day (75mg) could be to blame. I can’t stop taking that one. I’m only 61, and it seems like I’m falling apart.. 😄 Goodluck I hope you feel better soon. 👍
