Heart failure and gout
Hello
I have read and been told that gout can be as a result of some Heart meds mainly Blood Pressure Lowering. Have a look through your info leaflets to check if your on some that can cause this.

Milo, have you researched gout-aggravating foods? That’s the first thing I did after a gout diagnosis. Can’t remember them all right now, but I did cut right back on oily fish and mushrooms, to name just a couple. Also, a steroid shot plus 3 weeks of low dose oral steroids worked a treat for me. Rheumatologist thought I was on enough medication as it is without adding allopurinol and the like into the mix.
i share your pain! lol.. had an awful acute attack of gout 4 weeks ago.. hardly put my foot on the ground.. blood test taken confirmed high level of uric acid.. started alpurinol yesterday.. problem is i’m taking multi medication for angina and ischaemic heart disease and suffer from CKD stage 3/4.. which isn’t really behaving itself at the moment.. hospital have stopped my perindopril for 2 weeks and that’s causing my bp to rise..to be honest i dunno what the hell is gonna happen next regards meds
I am also a type 2 on the usual meds for BP, Cholesterol etc. I had my event mid March and had additional meds as previously mentioned, I read the various meds side effects and one specifically says in may cause a build up of Uric Acid, I have not changed the meds or dose, diet remains the same but despite that I still had an attack of gout, this took over 10 days to dissipate whilst taking Colchicine, I now take a Tart Cherry supplement daily which appears to have kept the attack receding, now pain free and the big toe no longer acts as a stuck up radiator 😂, not making any recommendations, just saying as it seems to work for myself.
just ordered cherry capsule supplements.. will let you know if they help
Gout is triggered by mild ckd pursuant to the poor circulation of blood to the kidneys coupled with constant use of diuretics and BP lowering drugs especially beta blockers.
When the patient is imposed with fluid restriction the risk of gout is doubled.
Cutting down on fishes, meat, animal organs, mushrooms, cauliflower, refined sugar & sugary drinks, sweet fruits in excess will be helpful to certain extent.
Craneberry, strawberry & blueberries are good for gout.
The main issue is to strive on low purine (protein) foods.
However, in cases of HF, food habits are not the culprits while the prognosis of the disease and the reactions of the tablets are the main cause.
I am on febuxostat 40 mg daily after an intensive gout attack.
I also consume lime juice by squeezing two lemons and adding water to it without sugar daily which keeps the body more alkaline in lieu of acidic apart from the lime being a natural diuretic.
Yes, my nephrologist. It is JUST BLACK CHERRY JUICE NOT FROM CONCENTRATE. I could not take allopurinol: bad side effects. Three years on the juice when I get a rare flare-up. I stay away from the capsules, bottled so called "concentrate". They are not the same. Stay off the red meat unless you are in a hurry to go on dialysis. I check my pH a couple times a week. Keep it in check with sodium bicarbonate, okayed by my PCP.
My hubby has suffered with gout for many years. However, some years ago he started to drink a glass of cherry juice every day and they reduced considerably. He perhaps now has two a year that last just a few days and are not as intense as the attacks he used to have.
He had a serious heart condition and is still on quite a lot of meds. His consultant was fine with the cherry juice and we also know other people who take it for the same reason including one who has taken it for as long as he can remember.
Fresh cherries can also be a delicious bonus particularly when served with a dash of Amaretto and ice cream!
