Palpatations

Hi everybody. Can anybody please tell me if using my gtn spray is meant to be used to stop palpatations or is it just for pain. With my angina I am troubled more with breathlessness and lots of palpatations and don't know if I am supposed to use spray when the palpatations start. I googled it but can't find an answer. Thankyou all.

HiWhen I had my heart attack I was told it was only for pain? Maybe best to ask someone? Good luck

My understanding is that angina is specifically chest pain. People that have angina may also have palpitations and other cardiac issues in addition, but those are not part and parcel of angina itself. GTN spray is therefore for use and only helpful when you’re experiencing chest pain.

GTN is a fast acting nitrate. When squirted under your tongue it’s quickly absorbed into the blood stream and dilates or widens blood vessels by causing the muscle in them to relax. It’s this effect that is used to stop the angina pain which is caused by the heart muscle not getting enough oxygenated blood due to narrow, disease constricted blood vessels not supplying enough blood to meet the demand. GTN is used to relieve angina pain. The palpitations could simply be caused by the stress and anxiety of the angina attack but you should discuss with your Dr.
