Switched bisoprolol 1.25mg to verapamil 120mg this is 3rd day.. And have had chest pain comes and goes.. Anybody experience...

my understanding is with Bisoprolol DO NOT just stop it !!! My understanding it is needs to be phased. Have a read of the slip of paper inside the Bisoprolol packet or if you haven't got it, go onto Patient UK website and type in Bisoprolol in the search box. Failing all that 'google' it. I'm on Bisoprolol and in the early days my GP and I played around with doses and this is what I learned from him.

No experience of Verapamil.

Whilst you’re right and you shouldn’t just stop taking it without medical advice, plenty of people can actually come off bisoprolol without any problems, particularly if at low or lower doses. Some people can come off high doses without issue, but some do need to slowly wean down and taper. It varies depending on the dose, why it’s being taken, and a person’s individual response. However, it can be completely appropriate to just stop bisoprolol if you’re switching onto a different med, as long as you’ve been advised to do so: verapamil and bisoprolol shouldn’t be taken together unless under fairly strict supervision from a cardiologist, as they are used to treat the same things, but work in different ways. Verapamil is often an alternative to beta blockers to manage certain conditions, not an addition, as in combination, the two can cause serious issues with heart rate, so it’s not uncommon to switch one for the other.

As always, the bottom line has to be: follow the specific medical advice you’ve been given. Which in some situations may be to stop a certain medication without tapering.

Yes my cardioligist told me just switch over the following day it's fine. Was only on 1.25mg so lowest dose...

Not experienced it as a result myself, but I know verapamil can cause chest pain. If in doubt, I’d always advocate caution: you could give 111 a call. If it’s bad or prolonged, don’t hesitate to get immediate help, though - always better to be safe than sorry.

I had to stop mine for 4 days prior to a treadmill test. I had chest pain and pain across the upper back which disappeared when i went back on bisoprolol. Recently i had my dose reduced and had it again for 2 or 3 days before it settled down. Sometimes stress and worry can cause muscles to tighten. Talk to your cardiologist though.
