Bisoprolol 1.25mg tablets

hi there, my doctor has put me on Bisoprolol 1.25mg tablets, because I have a fast heart and I get palpitations my doctor thinks it’s anxiety but has put me on this medication anyway. Even though it’s a low dose, I’m so scared. My heart is usually kind of fast, sometimes it’s 170bpm or 120bpm or in its normal range. If anyone has been on this dose how much did it slow your heart rate down by? Also will I need monitoring with this sort of dose or can I carry on like normal? As nothing was said. I worry so much

Many thanks

hello, I’m on bisoprolol 2.5 to take daily and I have also been given a 1.25 to take if I have any break through symptoms they haven’t been enough to stop my symptoms so I have now been put on others to take twice a day as well as the bisoprolol but they all definitely help me on a day to day basis but carry on as normal but keep an eye on if they help you!

Hello :-)

I have seen a couple of posts recently where people have been prescribed a low dose like you for anxiety

I take 2.5mg but mine is for my heart I have only just realised they prescribe them for anxiety to even though I suffer with severe anxiety and have not noticed they have helped my anxiety even though we are all different and have helped others

On such a small dose it should not have a massive impact on your heart rate it will possibly bring it down a little which from your usual heart rate would be a good thing as your anxiety is making your heart rate a little higher

You can get gadgets to check your heart rate cheap if that will help and keep an eye on it for your own peace of mind but I am sure you will be fine as you have been prescribed them :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

I have a feeling they bring down the heart rate caused by the anxiety as opposed to reducing the actual anxiety, I may be wrong though! 😉

Hello :-)

You are not wrong I remember now my Surgeon saying I needed to be on them as my anxiety is so bad and these would keep my heart rate down as for years it had been having to work to hard so now I know why my heart rate is ok but my anxiety is not :-)

Good point and reminder :-) x

I started off on 1.25 mgs but mine was for my heart, I am now on 2.5 mgs as after exercise my heart rate was a little on the high side.

It is a common Beta blocker used to slow down the heart, I would just carry on as normal and try not to worry about it which will help bring your heart rate down naturally.

I’m on 1.25mg. My RHR is around 54 most days but can go up quite quickly when I exercise. It peaks at about 152.

That is considered a normal maximum for my age (a rough guide is 220 - age = maximum), I’m just going ahead with life as normal as instructed by my cardiac surgeon.

My doctor has confirmed the dose and said he couldn’t increase it any further due to my RHR. I can drop into the high 40’s during the day if I’m feeling super relaxed!

I have quite a low heart rate anyway and 1.25 mg took mine down to about 38 beats a minute at times. Didn't feel well with my heart going that slow so came off it. to be honest felt better without it.

I had similar experience with even 1.25 dropping my rate to low to mid 40s

Hi my Mum had AF and latterly was on 7mg per day. After heart surgery I was on 2.5mg per day but felt like a zombie so self reduced to 1.25mg. My problem was a low pulse so you may cope with a larger dose. Wharfarin seems an other choice for AF.

To be honest it varies from person to person. I was given 2.5 mg because of my heart and blood pressure but my normal heart rate was between 50 and 60. It had risen slightly because if my heart, so it didn't make a huge amount of difference. After a period of time my blood pressure was dropping too low so the dose was halved, and another medication was eventually stopped. Even during the times when my BP was really low my heart rate didn't drop significantly.

For your peace of mind I would suggest you buy a blood pressure monitor, they aren't expensive, mine was about £20. It's best to buy one for the upper arm, the wrist ones are not thought to be as accurate.

Take 2 readings in the morning, work out the average, do the same in the evening. I keep a record in a notebook, day, time, BP, and HR. You will be able to see how it's affecting you.

1.25 mg is a very low dose. I can take up to 2 more if I get an episode of atrial fibrillation, and that would still be less than half the maximum daily dose of 10 mg.

I can understand your anxiety, I get the same when I have to start any new medication, but you won't know until you try.

Hi, I was wondering if you had had an ECG to look at your heart rhythm? I think propanolol is a beta blocker normally given for anxiety, but a fast heart rate can be for many many reasons and I feel it should be looked into. Bisoprolol did not agree with me, so keep an eye on how you feel on it, and personally I would want to ask for an ECG to determine the reason for your fast heart beat. Just my thoughts, I hope you get more information from the doctors.

hi, has your doctor discussed ablation , my heart rate kept going fast, about three times a week and I was put on these tablets. Then I had an ablation which I believe zaps all the electrics round your heart that are doing the wrong thing which causes tachycardia, since I had that 5 years ago I have been tablet free and feel well and have not had another episode. Good luck.

I was put on the same very low dose after a heart attack. My heart rate and BP were already normal so it dropped my BP too low and I just wanted to sleep. It is a low dose and could well improve your heart rate

Bisoprolol is widely used with no real issues. Don't worry. I have a a Android wrist monitor. Works fine. Just to go a idea. Don't let it run your life 👍👍

1.25mg is a low dose. I imagine they will monitor how you get on with this and adjust it up or down as needed. I wouldn’t say you have any cause to be alarmed. This BHF address links to information on beta-blockers like bisoprolol:
