Second heart operation

Hi my partner is waiting for a second heart operation. He had a valve repaired aged 18 the Ross procedure and done incredibly well off it. He has now been told its leaking is getting to much and will need a reoperation with 2 years. We have a 5 year daughter. Has anyone been through this?

Hi

Yes. There are several people here who have had second operations for a variety of reasons. You don't say which valve and whether it is due to be replaced this time?

I had a redo aortic valve replacement as the original replacement valve was too small and needed enlarging, along with part of my aorta, to accommodate the bigger valve. The surgeons regarded it as pretty routine. It took longer to recover - but recovery depends so much on your age and levels of fitness when you have your operation. I should add I'm not young any longer - and age is on your partners side.

Ask all the necessary questions and do everything you can to ensure the usual healthy lifestyle and exercise levels (with an energetic 5 year old that won't be difficult) and I'm sure he will be fine. Try not to worry too much, which is easier said than done I know.

Hopefully one of the others who has had same will be along soon to let you know what their thoughts are.

Yes :-) redo here. two years after first one due to the stitches failing MVR. The thing I can add is my second time was completely different to the first. I was more mentally prepared, because I knew what to expect being an old hat and all. however, the procedure and recovery takes a little more effort and in my opinion not as easy as the first. The procedure takes much longer and there may be more scars.. I had at least 5 drains this time and huge! but a different hospital. Keep positive. HTH
