I was diagnosed with hiatus hernia 40 years ago and have had some painful episodes. But after my hospital stay its really bad. It might be due to 10 days of antibiotics. But what do I do about diets? Heart? Kidney? Thyroid? Hernia? Some similarities but my 'things I can eat' list is getting shorter. Ive lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks.

Has anyone got problems with hiatus hernia on top of heart/kidney/thyroid?
Yes I have a hiatus hernia too along with vasospastic angina. Was about 35 yrs old when I started having problems. Was diagnosed with the hernia about 9 yrs ago would get really bloated stomach and bad abdominal pain on the right side. Was often vomiting and would also suffer with diarrhoea.
Doctor kept saying I had gastroenteritis but neither my husband or daughter ever caught it which led me to seek a second opinion privately. Had been on Omeprazole for 4 years by this point and other meds to control high blood pressure. Consultant did endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same time which didn't show anything other than the hernia except my stomach had masses of bubbles like fairy liquid!!
He took me off Omeprazole and switched me to Lansoprazole and have to touch wood as I say it but havent had an issue with hernia since. I have to be careful with things like citrus fruit as these can be quite acidic for me as well as certain types of lettuce. Consultant at the time gave me a food list of what things to eat to help calm hernia down. So was advised to not eat too much fibrous things which seems daft when you should be more heart healthy conscious but it's worked for me as I dont have the problems I used to suffer with. The Vasospastic Angina didnt get diagnosed until June last year but had problems for 5 years with this but kept being told it was my hernia or oesophagus pain even though the pain was in a completely different place and felt totally different!
Apologies this is such a long reply but hope this is of some use to you. Will try and dig out the food sheet Consultant gave me to follow. It's basically having a balance of like white bread and pastas and rice with the brown varieties and not overdoing the fibre.
Thank you. That is very helpful. Ive discovered by chance that citrus fruit and chocolate are on my NO list. So my Tesco order had to adjusted 50% yet again. They are going to think ive gone mad! I spoke to the g.p. yesterday but other than doubling up my lanzaprole from 15 to 30 mgs no other advice so anything you have would be helpful. The cardiologist said it was the biggest hiatus hernia he had seen but then he is looking at hearts not hernias! My body craves for cold milk which does go down well. The only period of time symptom free was after I had an endoscopy a few years back and they nudged the hernia out of the way a bit to try and see further but were unable to but it left me pain free for a long time. I think that the 10 days of mega antibiotics for the chest infection have set it off and maybe the retching too. So maybe an endoscopy might help!
Ah yes sorry forgot about the chocolate!! Have to say I didnt realise just how long I could make a bar last much to the annoyance of my husband who is beyond a chocoholic!! Pork is another trigger for me if we have a roast I can't then have another meal with it the next day. Bizarre I know any other meat I don't have a problem with. Honestly if 15mg isn't working don't be afraid to up it. I was prescribed 60mg initially then when I went to order repeat found GP had dropped to 15mg a day! That is not enough to control it for me so I take 30mg a day and I've been doing that for several years and find I don't have the acid reflux at night or the discomfort in my stomach. It really is about working out what triggers it so you either eat less of it or cut it out completely. Grapefruit is a big no no for people like us even in juice form!
Hi, I've been on 30mg Lanzoprazole for a hiatus hernia, and to protect my stomach wall from the ant-iplatelet drugs, for around 18 years. I also have CHD. I have few problems with food despite eating a high fibre diet although Pork, uncooked peppers, even cooked green peppers, soda bread and more than a few squares of chocolate at one sitting do cause me problems, especially green peppers. I found 15mg insufficient, but 30mg Lanzoprazole works fine for me. I take it in the morning about 1 hour before eating. A word of caution. On two occassions many years apart I thought my hernia was playing up causing me to take, in addition, though not within two hours, copious amounts of Gaviscon. The problem disappeared immediately after stenting on each occassion. I wrongly attributed the cause of my discomfort to the hiatus hernia and if in the future uncharteristic problems start to arise I will be contacting my cardiologist for a check up. I hope your condition settles down again soon.
I suffered for years with my hiatus hernia, had a quadruple bypass and was put on Lansoprazole to line my stomach. I take my tablet first thing in the morning, at least an hour before food and meds.
Let me touch wood before I say - I suffer minutely compared to before.
I love Lansoprazole.
