Don’t know if this is the right group to write in but feel it is so for the past year I’ve been getting really scary heart beats and very fast heart rate from just standing up and breathless and dizziness I’ve had 2 normal ecgs but at the time I wasn’t experiencing these symptoms so nothing would of been picked up,I’m only 17 and my heart worries are really tying my Day to day life my parents don’t realise how terrible it’s making me feel and just try to brush it off as it’s nothing,I really feel I need to have a 24 hour ecg but am worried my gp won’t let me just don’t think he will understand how terrible I’m feeling 😭😕

Convinced I’ve got a heart problem 😭
Im in no way a medical expert, but, if you have been having this for a year then I would be concerned by that. Speak to your GP and try to give them as much detail and history as you can. Are you on any other medication or other health problems? It could be something really simple and easy to sort out. The key to it is to have as much information for your GP, so keep a log/diary of your symptoms. HTH
Hi Luke,
Ask your GP to refer you to cardiac risk in the young. This is a specialist centre in at George’s hospital London that investigates possible cardiac issues in young people. They are really good as I know fist hand what it’s like as I see them every year. Don’t put it off, speak to your GP they will u see stand mate.
Hi Luke. I can’t give better advice than those above but as a grandma of teenage boys can I ask if you’re drinking a lot of high energy drinks or Coca Cola. Some of these drinks can raise the heart rate. I know they did with two of my grandsons. They were drinking them because they weren’t sleeping well so were tired during the day. One of the boys was particularly ill so he came to stay so I could get him into a good routine with regular hours to bed and meals etc. I’m not suggesting for one minute that this is your problem but just ask you to think about it. Don’t worry about speaking to your GP. That’s what he/she is there for. Take care.
Hi Luke, All the above are bang on. Please go & see your GP. If you feel like you’re struggling to explain, just show them what you’ve written here - they’ll understand (I have a long history of being misread or poorly explaining myself, so I realise your nervousness). I am certain they will take it seriously. There really is nothing to lose & everything to gain by going. Be strong, there’s loads of us here to support / advise whenever you want. 💪
Hi Luke. I agree with what people have said above. Could be something, could be nothing. Better to get checked out.
I got referred to cardiologist by GP aged 24 as I was getting some chest tightness and naturally working within Cardiology you would worry!
If either parents have had any heart problems I would mention this when speaking to GP.
I also went through a period of getting bad palpitations when my partner was unwell, it resolved after this period.
Various tests can be done, blood tests, as well as ECG, 24 hour ECG monitoring if they feel appropriate, 24 hour Blood Pressure Monitoring if they feel appropriate.
I have also been to CRY testing free ECG testing Cardiac Risk in Young is a charity and does free ECG testing all over but unsure whether they will be doing at the moment during COVID-19.
Lots of things can cause odd sensations etc but best to get checked out.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
All the best.
Yes going to be speaking to my go in the morning about it and hope to get a 24 hour ecg just super worried they won’t take it seriously is what my mind keeps telling me and yes will let you know any further info once had it done thanks again 🙂
Unfortunately, being young sometimes means things like this and for instance chest tightness are not taken seriously and you have to be persistent and say it is affecting you a lot and you are very anxious about it.
I know it is hard not to worry, I am a natural worrier and feel some symptoms I sometimes get are anxiety related. If they say they think it is nothing to worry about say please for my own reassurance can I have further investigations.
You can also request to be seen privately, but obviously this is not cheap.
Benenden is very good, about £8 a month and if you cannot get appointments within I think 8 weeks through NHs for investigations requested they can get you seen locally sooner.
They also offer 24/7 GP advice line for telephone and video consultations for support.
BUPA is a lot more expensive I think.
Remember you are not being silly, you are concerned for your health, are educated to realise different conditions can affect all ages. Glad you are not ignoring it.
Get you parents to read these posts. I work in Cardiology.
Be firm but polite that you would like tests to investigate.
All the best
Hi Luke. Try cutting out caffeine from your diet. I am very sensitive to it, even had to switch to decaff tea! I had palpitations and felt breathless, but had unremarkable ECGs etc. Turned out it was caffeine related. Be aware of hidden sources too, eg green tea, chocolate, some chewing gums, and even cold remedies. Good luck x
Do you have a fit bit? If you do it shows and stores your heart beat so you would be able to show your Doctor when it spikes.
I had postural hypotension when I was a teenager - usually after a cross-country run of several miles.
Do you exercise, diet, work out, take too much caffeine or what - or does it happen all the time?
Also yes it happens when ever I stand or do little movement x
Hi Luke. How did you get on calling GP? 🙂
Been trying to get hold of them past few days no answer 😂😭
What you don't even get through to reception? Assuming you don't have online GP account to book appointment? Have you called 111 because if they feel you need to see GP they will book you in to local GP but may not be your GP practice.
Yes I can get through to reception just never anything available quite annoying tbh
I know sometimes I dial the number 150 times. If you can't get through call 111 for advice. Brenden is worth having, it's about £8 a month private healthcare if NHS can't offer an assessment within 8 weeks for something they will but they also offer lots of support services such as GP advice line and they offer telephone and video consultations. It is very good I saw cardiologist under it and also dermatologist years ago.
Will call my gp surgery again tomorrow if can’t get through will deffo take a look at that aswell 😊👌
You could also search your GP practice online and you might be able to send them an online message or an email. Good luck. I know it's frustrating but keep trying. If you can't see GP see nurse practitioner as if needs be they will call GP through or contact GP on your behalf
