I’d like to know how long I have - also found kidney cancer during scan. I had my heart attack out of the blue in January 6th - I’m a nervous wreck, still not back to work, meds make me so tired, been told kidney is treatable but not until stats are better for heart although rehab seem pleased with me , I feel like I’m sorting my jewellery out to my grandkids and all other stuff - mentally I am all over the place - aged 59 thanks for any advice, love to know people have had at least 10 yrs after HA

I am so sorry you are in such a bad place. All I can say is that no-one knows how long they have. It is always a good idea to sort out who gets what when we die cos it is good to have that behind us and then we can forget about it. I did it years ago before it became too emotional. Just take things one day at a time and Carpe Diem. Find things for which to be grateful and do things you enjoy. Tell people you love them. Smile thereby releasing happy endorphins.

Hi. I was 59 when I had a significant HA. I immediately adjusted lifestyle recommendations, which was not a lot bc I was living a fairly healthy lifestyle. Running, eating relatively healthy and taking my meds. It’s in the genes. Fortunately still pretty active, but wogging(walking and jogging) instead of jogging. On more meds and just started Entresto even though active. My Cardiologist thinks it’ll help even at earlier stages of HF. I’m now 75. Wish you well!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply / 75 that’s fantastic !! I have just been told I am pre diabetic too - healthy weight and am now eating even more healthy after HA / it’s so contradictory to me as all the healthy fruits I am eating as can’t take supplements now, are showing as to be avoided !! I have looked up and stress amd beta blockers can cause this / none of my blood tests showed this before? Amd I. This case was only being tested for electrolytes as I keep getting shooting pains in hands and feet / I have been on my supplements for at least 15 years B12 and Vit D and busy B’s all from Holland and Barrett’s and was told to get my vitamins etc from fruit and veg now - I am so confused with it all . Thanks again 🥰

Hello :-)

There have been posts on here in the past where members have popped on 20 years after heart attacks if I remember right

My heart attacks were just nearly 2 years ago but I can talk about my Dad and this was some years ago but he had his first heart attack I think about 45 then he had a couple more a quadruple Bypass in his early 50's he died at 77 but not from his heart condition so heart wise from his first heart attack that makes 32 years and I think if he had not got something else he would no doubt have still been here today

He walked and kept healthy and his heart served him well so this is not a life sentence and what they can do now to what they did back in my Dads day is so more advanced so try to stay positive you are here for years to come just let the professionals work their magic and follow what they tell you to do :-) x

That’s a great little story about your dad BeKind that his heart wasn’t the problem in the end. Goes to show life can go on after a cardiac event - I needed to hear that today. Take care and GrannyE - like everyone reminds us “one day at a time” xx

Hello :-)

That was actually the saddest part to be honest we all felt after what he had been through his heart would take him but something else did and was a shock but right to the end his heart was beating good or so they told us

He ate well but he liked good food but he walked and walked every single day more or less went swimming and just stayed active and I can tell you he went quicker than we could when he was walking no one could keep up with him :-)

He kept it simple though and it obviously worked :-)

Hope you are enjoying your Bank Holiday Monday , raining here but think we have been lucky it was a nice weekend as at least all the Holiday has not been a wash out :-) x

I’m so sorry BeKind that your dad is no longer around but what an inspiration he must have been to you all following his heart episodes and it is certainly encouraging to hear that his heart remained strong until the end by the activity he continued to do. Thanks for sharing his story and yours. I’m still in bed recovering from the “c” virus but following yours and other encouraging replies I’m looking forward to regaining some energy and getting out asap! Shame Easter bank hol nearly over but at least we’ve got the rest of spring to look forward to. Please enjoy the rest of the April showers ❤️🧚🏼‍♀️ xxx

I'm sure there was a post about a gentleman who lived to 103, despite having a heart attack in his (relatively) younger days...

25yrs post massive heart attack & cardiac arrest for my husband, he was only 42 at the time. He also went through cancer treatment in 2021 . It takes time for your meds to kick in & it can take time to get the meds optimised, it's good to know your cancer is treatable, you'll get there though

No one can tell you how long you will live. No doctor, no statistician, no actuary.

But what can be predicted, and with astonishing accuracy, is how long a thousand people just like you will live on average.

Those predictions are contained in the mortality tables, published by the Office Of National Statistics. If you looked them up you'd see that the average 59 year old woman in the UK could expect to live for another 26 years.

However, you're not the average woman, you are L144, an absolutely unique individual! One of the things that makes you special and different is that you've had a heart attack. On average heart attack survivors will typically have their life expectancy reduced by about 11-12%. So instead of another 26 years you might expect another 23 years. If you have additional co-morbidities, anything from say Lupus to Type 2 Diabetes, that will reduce your life expectancy further, as would detrimental life style factors like smoking.

But assuming your cancer is treatable, and that you have a decent life style and no obvious comorbidities, then you have an excellent prospect of getting those ten more years you mentioned, and indeed a good few extra on top of that!

So if I was you I'd focus my efforts on getting well, living healthily, and enjoying each moment of the amazing life that you've been blessed with. Genuinely, your odds are not as bad as you fear.

Good luck!

James Lovelock has not been on here, but he survived a heart attack for nearly 50 years, if that is any consolation. Died at 103.
