Can I take day/night nurse tablets for a cold with a pacemaker fitted? I’m assuming no to day nurse because of caffeine?

I personally find Day/Night nurse tabs make my heart race. However a couple of paracetamol and a cup of tea is perfectly fine and seems to improve cold symptoms at a fraction of the price. Get well soon!

Hi, my husband had a stroke, and as a range of medication, he was told he wasn’t to have any cold remedies Lemsip /night nurse or the likes. His medication would react badly with the over the counter product.

He now as a hot lemon and honey and a couple of paracetamol as Futandfearless said.

Best wishes Pauline

Hi Gsarah,

I would check with a Pharmacist.

I can't like most heart patients take any cold remedies containing pseudoephedrine as it constricts your blood vessels.

Caffeine raises my heart rate too.

It's as recommended by the others back to basics.

Honey and lemon in hot water ( I add a few whole cloves and whisky).

Paracetamol.

I hope you feel better soon.

You shouldn't use a malt though! 😱

Don't worry I use ' cooking' whisky.

I know using a single malt would be sacrilegious 😊

I daren’t have any alcohol because they don’t know what caused my pulse to drop. Completely healthy apart from bradycardia. Obviously I now have a PM. Liver is fine, but won’t alcohol make my heart race? Only been 8 week since pm fitted, it’s made no difference though I felt fine before it was fitted. Didn’t know I had any probs.

The whisky is optional😊

It sounds as though you need a review.

Have you got a follow up appointment with your Cardiologist?

Yes all fine been told to enjoy me life as nothing is wrong!! Feels wrong being told this when I’ve had a pacemaker fitted. Worried about underlying things they may have missed. Surely something caused it . May have a brandy don’t like whisky lol. Thanks maybe I should just take their advice!!

There is a brand made specifically for people with high blood pressure called Nyquil it's made by Vicks. I haven't taken it myself, but know of someone that has taken it with Bp meds and not had any issues

You don't say whether you have AF or not, but Lemsip and Boots Cold and Flu remedy both put me into AF.

Researching the ingredients I find the decongestant phenylephrine hydrochloride is one of the main active ingredients and should be avoided by people with heart rhythm problems.

Good luck

No AF my pulse was low just dropped suddenly. I’ve got complete heart block but nothing else wrong at all. Thanks

It’s not so much the caffeine as the Pseudoephedrine that is not good for the heart as your pharmacist will tell you if you try to buy it. My all time cure is Vicks vapour rub, Jakemans honey and lemon lozenges and plenty of hot water with honey and lemon.
