It’s always nice to welcome new people to the BHF forum. But I am not sure we’ll be of much help to you. We are a forum for heart issues. Let’s see.

Is your hiatus hernia affecting your heart. Mine is responsible for triggering heart arrhythmias. There is a connection between the two according to my cardiologist and gastroenterologist in my case. If that is so for you it is well worth speaking with your doctor about a connection.

It doesnt seem that doctors tend to repair haitus hernias these days unless they are very large and its clear they are impacting our health substantially. Please persist though as the symptoms are awful as i know only too well ongoing. Good luck.

It absolutely can and most likely is contributing to your issues. I have no doubt whatsoever that it is in my case. The connection is so clear in me. Worth researching further.

I have a hiatus hernia if you drink alcohol, you need to stop. Even small amounts are a problem.

Hi, Ihave serious heart problems and also have a Hernia, which they are very reluctant to fix. I found PPI’s didn’t work, Ranatadine. did but they promptly took it off the market. I now take Famotidine, which works nearly as well, Dr. wouldn’t prescribe it on the grounds of cost but my Consultant prescribed it. I also take Gaviston but don’t take anywhere the time you take Famotidine.I can no longer drink alcohol and have to watch I don’t eat too much rich or spicy food. Also being Diabetic doesn’t help, gastric problems seem to combine with heart problems.Be kind to yourself and take things easy.

Like you I was on Ranadine and it worked well for me but as you say they stopped prescribing it, its replacement doesn't work as well for me so I also now take Gaviscon. I don't drink any alchohol and can't eat anything spicy or acidic like vinegar, tomatos can also be a bit acidic so don't have them either. I also have Gastric problems as well as Heart Failure and Lung problems. As the saying goes "life is a bit of a bitch at times".

I had same issues with finding ranitidine as I didn't know they'd withdrawn it from shelves...i have hernia well above my tummy button..its horrible horrible horrible... it's symptoms are so similar to the ones I described to go and found my heart problems 2yrs ago...it makes me feel like I've been punched in the stomach and winded and it's constant.awaiting hosp appt for it...but getting back to ranitidine,I actually found some in a savers I think it was (or maybe another cheapie place)at the beginning of year ish???but I think😁 it's still about if you hunt for it.if not then a PPI like omeprazole etc and also peptac liquid that you buy over counter at pharmacy...helps me a lot with reflux acid as its thicker than gaviscon and gaviscon empties from bottle quicker as well xDx

Hi, I came across your post just now and I thought I’d update you. I also had an umbilical hernia as well as the hiatus hernia. Asked GP about the umbilical hernia that was twisting, she sneered and said she’d seen worse and no chance getting it sorted on NHS. It got worse and I had it fixed privately. Local anaesthetic not full because of my heart. Only 3hours at the hospital and the difference is really good. Hope you are feeling better now.😸

AmFabulous in reply toVelvetSky

Please tell me the process, how did it go,is it a surgery?I want to know every details before I do mine,am tire of taking meds

VelvetSky profile image
VelvetSky in reply toAmFabulous

Yes it is surgery, I had it at a Spire hospital, with a local anaesthetic, all in cost £2,629, if you have a full anaesthetic it is £1000 more but you can get keyhole surgery. My heart is too bad for a full anaesthetic.I met the surgeon before hand and went for the pre op checks.

Day of surgery went in at 10.30 am, was given paracetamol, an ibuprofen and two files of oramorph, and then you walk down to the theatre, I felt so drunk I had to hold the anaesthetist’s arm. It was very laid back, he injects your tummy with local anaesthetic, must admit the first one was a bit ouchy but you don’t feel the rest.

You are a bit off with fairies on the oramorph, you can feel him fiddling about inside but no pain, weird, he said mine was like an iceberg, not much on the surface but a lot of problems below. It didn’t really take that long, at the end he asked if I wanted an inny or outy, what? He was making me a new tummy button.

The internal stitches stay forever but surface ones dissolve then he sealed it all with thick purple superglue so it’s entirely waterproof and you don’t need any dressings on it. I’ve had no infection in the wound.

At first the wound was about 4. Inches across but it’s 3 weeks now and it’s shrunk to about 2 inches across, I wasn’t expecting that. I used arnica and bio oil.

The only thing I would change would be less oramorph, I don’t do well on morphine, or more antiemetic as I was very sick after I got home by 2pm, I was fit enough to go by taxi, family had covid, perhaps I should have stayed longer at the hospital.

You can’t lift anything heavy for six weeks, I bought a light camping kettle.

I’m glad I had it done. Good luck with yours😸

aha...ive not updated my posts I'm so sorry....ok so,I've had a even and had a diagnosis of a small hernia above my tummy button....im currently in the queue for an op...howevwr my problem has also been diagnosed as being diastasis recti which is separation of the upper stomach muscles...due to a multiple pregnancy or something like that lol....ive had a lot of stomach surgeries that would explain it but apparently it's only fixable privately as it's classed as cosmetic....even though it's horrible.so I'm now trying with exercise to reverse it which isn't really easy after my 3rd lot of reinforcement stents...honestly,I've decided that I'm proper broken lol xxx

A HH in itself is almost always painless. What it can do, though, is allow acid more easily to rise into the food pipe, and that can cause a wide range of pains, even into the back and shoulder area. Very many people have HH but don't know it. If acid is a problem, you could get your doctor to prescribe a short course of a PPI medicine, such as esomeprazole, or you could try Gaviscon Plus for a few days to see if this helps. If it does, you'll know it is acid causing your troubles.

My HH is well controlled with esomeprazole but still causes me troubles at times, however - a kind of gnawing pain in the centre-left area of my chest.

That's really helpful Steve, I have a HH and have been on omeprazole but it doesn't help so I tried Gaviscon and the pain in my chest has gone. My anxiety was through the roof, thinking I was having a HA ( had a stent fitted this year). You saying you had chest pain too has eased my mind : )

Ppiman profile image
Ppiman in reply toBonham123

I've been in a similar boat. Digestion and heart pains can be so very similar. I don't envy you over the way you'll have been feeling having had your stent fitted. Myself, I get very little relief from Gaviscon, but I do know that others find it useful (the far cheaper non-branded versions are just as good, btw).

I find doctors aren't always very understanding or sympathetic towards digestive issues, sadly. I think they just don't know enough about them. As I sit here, I have a kind of hottish "lump" just below my sternum, to the left; it seems linked to my heart rhythm problems, too. This year I've had several checks on my heart and digestive system but when I ask my GP, he just says, "Well you know what it is" (i.e. my hiatus hernia). And yet if I look online, I find it so often said that a HH causes no symptoms in most sufferers. Well, it does in a few! ;-)

If you happen to carry too much weight, btw, one thing that is worth doing with a HH is to slim down as much as possible as there's lots of evidence that being overweight adds strain to that area (where the food pie goes through the diaphragm on top of the stomach) and worsens things. Also, if you suffer at all from IBS, diverticular problems, or constipation (or even just "gassiness", "windiness" or "sluggishness"), all these can add to the problem (I have them all!!).

Am very sorry 😞 we are on same boat, digestive problem is the worst ever,I feel same way you feel before and even worst infact I feel very hot 🔥 sensation in my chest and head I can't explain the experience I lived with this pain for 10 years without knowing where my problem is coming from, just going and doing wrong test, just discovered this month,Gaviscon is not working for me,so my GP prescribe exomeprazole 40mg and maalox I think you should give a try too so this calm my hot sensation down a bit,but sadly 😥 u was told not cure yet,I really need complete cure because now am allergic to many food and fruits.

Ppiman in reply toAmFabulous

One thing I have found over the years is that digestive problems, nausea being the worst for me to have to cope with, can go on for months on end but then, or no obvious reason, to slowly get getter. I've had this happen in the past as well as this year, although I'm not fully out of the woods yet, thankfully the nausea has almost gone.

I suspect you'll find that this might be your experience eventually, too, Let's hope so.

I believe I have a HH. I use gaviscon quite a lot (usually on going to bed) and omeprazole/esamoprazole when it gets bad. If I took the latter every day it would prevent the reflux completely but I'd rather not go down that route!

My cardiologist has just told me I can stop taking low-dose aspirin which I've been on for about 3 years. I will wait and see if that cuts down on my reflux before doing anything else. If not I'll probably buy an IQoro device.

PS You can buy a 7 day course of esamoprazole over the counter from one of the cut-price chain chemists quite cheaply. Its worth trying it.

Try Lansoprazole 1 hour before all other meds and food 👍

AmFabulous profile image

Exonaprazole is good, but Gaviscon for me is not working, but I was still given maalox because my case has gone too far for many years before I finds out.

Hi and welcome, I had 3 of my family members with this condition, all had to have radical surgery to put their stomach back into the correct position, things may of changed since then but I wish you all the best for your future,

I truly feel for you as I also have a HH. Pain across the chest, tummy bloating solid like a brick, acid in throat which strips the enamel from your teeth.

Magically if you take Lansoprazole properly your life should change, mine did.

VERY IMPORTANT to take Lansoprazole first thing in the morning and wait 1hr before having food and other meds.

Some people just take their Lansoprazole with their other meds in the morning so the Lansoprazole doesn’t work.

If you are suffering badly ask your GP if you should take 2 a day for 1-2 wks until you feel more comfortable then drop down to 1 each morning, remember Lansoprazole only works if taken on it’s own 1 hour before anything else.

I suffer if I have acids like orange juice/squash, coffee, fizzy drinks, lime juice is the worst for me. For a week try blandly foods to stop that horrible hurty feeling in your upper gut, across the chest etc.

This has worked my end and with others that were going back and forth to their GP’s.

1 HOUR BEFORE OTHER MEDS AND FOOD!

Good luck 🤞

I had a Quadruple Bypass 😊 I take all heart meds but was not taking the Lansoprazole on its own to line the stomach. I use to think I was having heart attack feelings all over again but I wasn’t.

I’ve been taking my lansoprazole at the same time as my other meds - have I been doing it wrong for 10 months???

MumaLines profile image
MumaLines in reply toCurlyman83

Probably, the same as myself and my two sisters.

They were having tests for other conditions as their GP’s couldn’t tell them what the problem was.

Turned out they were taking their handful of meds in the morning together with Lansoprazole.

My pharmacist said Lansoprazole needs to be taken before all other meds, blood thinners, aspirin as they irritate the stomach and aggravate HH.

Jane 😊

Welcome AmFabulous! I am glad you brought your question to this forum! I have heart problems and a HH along with G.E.R.D. and now Diabetes. I have had Reflux surgery as well. Started off with taking Nexium and had to stop after taking it for 3 years. I appreciate a lot of info that was said here because some of us don't have just one problem going on. It couldbe combined with other medical issues. Thanks to all who gave their situation.

Am so sorry for ur problem too,so how do u feel now?

in reply toAmFabulous

Hi AmFabulous, They did an Esophageal PH monitoring first. I tested positive for Helicobacter pylori, also. I was told this is hard to get rid of. It's been 22 years. My procedure was Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication. Done over night and tube was taken out the next day. I had to take Nexium after surgery. As I said I took it for 3 1/2 years. Only set back was not being able to throw up. I heard that there was a new procedure that you were able to throw up. Don't know about this one. I've just recently been having problems because any sulfur drugs I take causes reflux that burns my stomach and throat. You will need to watch what you eat as well. I took the surgery because my uncle got throat cancer. That's why I did. Some say it didn't help others it did. It will be your own decision as to what you do. My surgery was done in USA.

This type of Hernia is terrible. About 27 years ago I had similar problems that I thought made it not worth living. This link from NHS describes an operation that worked for me. However, the NHS is in a mess due to the coronavirus. nhs.uk/conditions/hiatus-he... played this song over and over again knowing how the performer himself struggled with his own tragedies.

AmFabulous in reply toAuiron

Thanks for your contribution, please can you describe how was the operation ,and what was your state after the operation and how long now?

Auiron profile image
Auiron in reply toAmFabulous

It was some time ago the surgery and the hospital is since demolished. My doctor had some influence and a specialist came to the surgery to see me and I think a few others. He did say not to eat certain foods: acidic foods, citrus fruits and tomatoes, alcohol, beans, lentils, carbonated drinks, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and anything similar. So I ate porridge, bananas and drank only water - can't remember the rest.

The operation was I think Laparoscopy and I felt very tired and only sipped water and high protein products from glass for about 5 weeks. A few weeks after the operation I had to return for a device or tube to be removed. Some people recover quickly but in my case, it dragged on for 3 months though it was only discomfort and no real pain. I was lucky in the end as everything worked out well.

Since having the operation I've been back twice more for treatment as there is no long-term absolute cure.

I do not eat any big meals anymore and tend to nibble all day long. That did make me overweight and becoming a commander of myself, ordering myself when to eat and not to, solved that. Getting back to the same weight I was at 25 certainly helped a lot, and in my opinion, is a must.

All the very best - you need to be very strong.
