Neck/shoulder nerve pain post surgery

Five weeks since AVR, 3 weeks since MI, clot and stents, 1 week since Pleural Effusion. Neck and shoulder nerves pinched - excruciating pain, paracetamol touches it but back the moment relief wears off, and limiting deep breathing.

Anybody been down this road?

Sleepless for 3 nights now.

Weary and very depressed. GP proposed sticking with Paracetamol for now.

X

So sorry that things are not right yet. When I got desperate with pain and couldn't sleep the GP gave me five days of oral morphine. It gave me a break from the unremitting pain and enabled me to sleep. Before that he had tried a heavy duty pain killer for a week which didn't touch it. I only got more than paracetamol because I kept ringing........ it was week six when things improved for me and I can honestly say that the quality of my life is so much better now it was worth all the pain but if you had asked me at the time I would have said it was a mistake agreeing to the operation. Hang on in there - you will get through this. Xx

Also ask for a syringe to measure the dose - and you can just squirt it in your mouth. You don't leave any on the spoon that way.

I had a lot of pain across my shoulders and back after my AVR and subsequent pacemaker installation. I was already on paracetamol and codeine for back and shoulder problems but they didn’t touch it. Lying flat on my back aggravated the problem and I ended up getting oromorph on top of the others - didn’t help! For some reason the surgeon had done an exploratory incision in my groin, and when I moved the pain was as bad as my shoulder. The incision had damaged the nerves, so they gave me gabapentin. Such relief, not only did it stop the groin pain but also the back and shoulder pain.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Wendy.
