I’m on 5mg. Are you going straight onto 10mg, or increasing from 5mg. I’m fine on 5mg but interested to follow this thread if some people are having problems.

Increasing from 7-5

I was on 10mg for 3 months after my heart bypass. Felt tired but I put that down to recovering from a bypass. Far as I could tell I had no side effects on it or coming off it.

My mother has just decreased to 10 mg was on 15 mg for years. She’s seen a new consultant and had a medication review and doses changed and somethings added in.

15mg of Bisoprolol is a pretty high dose 10mg is about the aim for most people. I personally have been changed from 10mg to 7.5 and back to 10mg on a few occasions !!!

I know. They slowly put it up over a couple of years. As it became less effective they added in other drugs. She was monitoring BP for months leading up to lockdown initially for cardiologist then GP. Started complaining on daily Lockdown call that was feeling ‘odd’ asked her what BP was, seemed to be really good for her then thought to ask what’s your heart rate on the BP monitor. She was running around 40 - 48 bpm having previously been much higher.GP wasn’t concerned but I was.

Had been referred to Papworth prior to lockdown and phone consultation, followed by face to face appointment came at right time for her. Drugs changed few weeks ago.

She spoke to GP today who said he wasn’t happy with BP of 135/74 and pulse of 60. Don’t know what he is expecting. Her BP in past has been 200+/120. Luckily she is due another phone consultation with cardiologist in next few weeks.

That is quite some storm she has been through. The hardest part for us on here is that none of us have medical knowledge so can only go off our own experiences.

I take Bisoprolol but only 6,25mg + a load of others. In general I refuse to take a higher dose as I don't want to be zombie like as I have quite a natural slow heart rate to start with. I would happily swap your mums BP & pulse for my own. If her GP thinks they are wrong then I would be looking for another GP who is more understandable of her condition.

Mum appreciates that GP calls her every few weeks to see how she is and ask after her BP and pulse. Luckily he doesn’t involve himself in her medication anymore.

I never got above 5mg after my bypass last year- ideally they seem to aim at the 10mg but I was like a zombie on 5. 16 months post I’ve just had it reduced again to 1.25 as my heart rate just gets too low. It’s the only med I’ve had probs with

I was on 2.5mg for 11 months before my ICD/Pacemaker and then was put on 10mg at 5mg in morning and evening. I was told last month my heart failure is worse and now on blood thinners to prevent stroke. I am not sure if the side effects of tired, pains in legs etc are down to the biosprolol or not.

As for my own GPS, I haven't heard from them since before lockdown and I have just requested another prescription for Furosemide via a telephone appointment due in 5 days.

I am on just 2.5mg but I also take ramipril.

I am interested in this thread as I have just finished 12 weeks rehab and I still have no stamina. I take too many medications but will always do what the doctor says.

Nelliedog profile image

Ditto I’ve just been increased to 2.5mg and also on ramipril but had no rehab whatsoever, had stents in Dec & 2 x cabg in Jan with a nasty wound infection so didn’t leave hospital til end Feb and lockdown! Everyone tells me how well I look, but it’s the makeup tbh, I have no mojo or stamina just tired and depressed!

Ageingfast profile image

I understand exactly your feelings. I didnt get given any rehab, I did my own, at home.

An infection is just the pits.

I have also had a full stroke and the joke on the stroke forum is "you look so well". I think the bloodthinners do this (Clopidogrel) plus the fact that I get outside in my garden for a lot of hours each week.

Regret that its up to me to get over this. Smiling a lot helps. Positive outlook helps. I have also benefitted from gentle yoga, relaxation classes and meditation. So lets hope that all comes back on song sometime.

But you and me have survived, So lets look to find the reason we have been given a life when many do not.

And lets follow this thread and see what others can add.

I’m on 10mg a day split over am/pm. Not had any major problems. Generally tired but I think that is more to do with my heart condition than the medication, that and being on the go most if the day!

I was on 10mg for 6 years after a heart attack at 35, now 41 I have moved over to another Nebivolol 5mg because I was suffering quite bad with ''mens problems'' both with obtaining and maintaining 'excitement'! This could be caused by other issues but time will tell, been 1 week since I switched medication and under Bisoprolol my H/R was average 75 and new tablet appear to be 85?

My husband is on 10mg which he takes at night - this is one of 18 tablets a day he takes after a pretty traumatic year . He is incredibly tired all the time and the cardiologist had said that Bisoprolol contributes to this but doesn’t want to change it at the moment. There are obviously lots of reasons for his tiredness but Bisoprolol does contribute

I’m currently taking 3.75mg - told you increase if need to. It does make me tired but really helps at HR. The palpitations are still there though ☹️

I had AVR surgery 4 years ago,

(age 58)

I was on both ,Ramipril and Bisoprolol,

I didnt have any side effects ( that I noticed),

until last year ,

Then it finally dawned on me ,

that I didn't really feel any better ,after my OP.

I'm quite a fit bloke ,worked hard and played hard,

I felt washed out all the time ,

Aches and pains all over ,

and my gout ,went off the scale!

However the worst thing was the depression,

something that I've never had a problem with,

I was just sitting looking out of the window, wishing I wasn't here!

So I decided to stop the tablets,

And in my case , I started to feel better after a couple of days!

The big black cloud , lifted,

and my joints started to ease up,

but my BP started to rise!

I finally got a phone consultation with my GP, and discussed it with her ,

So now I'm on 50mg of Losartan

My BP I coming down.

Not the best thing to do ,just stopping meds .

I wouldn't recomend it , obviously it's not safe,

But I'd just had enough.

Hi Gillymaccy I've been on 10 mg Bisoprolol for approx 6 weeks with no side effects.

I was originally on 5mg for angina for a number of years and when it got worse it was increased by another 5mg to 10mg split across AM and PM. It did help the angina and I wasn’t massively aware of feeling any more tired as I was always tired anyway.

I was on that for over 12 months until recently when I had a CABG x 4 in June. The bisoprolol was reduced to 2.5mg on discharge but my resting heart rate was in the 90’s so my GP increased it to 3.75mg and I’m down to resting of 80’s.

I’ve not started any form of rehab yet as only 5 weeks post op so not sure what will happen when I try exerting myself. I’m doing daily walks and my HR stays around the low 100’s.

Interestingly my mum was on bisoprolol after a rough time with AF (2 x ablations, unresolved AF, over a week in hospital, amiodarone etc.) and she found she couldn’t tolerate it, her GP eventually took her off it after speaking to the cardiologist.

I guess different drugs affect different people in different ways.

Hi I’ve been on 10mgs for a few months for AF whilst waiting an ablation next year. No immediate problems but still in AF most days for a period. My PSVT still has its moments to

I have been on 10mg Bisoprolol since my Heart Attack in January 2019, and never been reviewed by my GP.

I was on 3.75mg, but found I was getting completely out of breath with a little exertion. So much so that I was unable to speak, it was as though I had just finished a marathon. After seeing my cardiologist, he lowered my dose to 1.25mg and I have been fine ever since, I even feel I could run a marathon (not really).

I'm on 10mg Bisoprolol / 300 Flecainide/ Rivaroxiban. On the high doses for maybe 10 months now.

BP usually about 130 over 75 / BPM around 45 (Low BPM hasn't had any noticeable negative effects. I just imagine I'm particularly laid back - LOL)

Side effects - nothing major. Maybe constipation

I had my 1st attack of afib in late July and was in hospital for 5 days as the drs tried to bring my heart rate down. They put me on 15mgs of bisoprolol, along with 250mgs of digoxin and 20 mgs of rivaroxaban. I had a successful cardioversion in September and was immediately taken off all meds, apart from the bisoprolol, which they reduced to 10mgs. I feel okay in myself now as the 10mgs controls my high bp too, without having to take other meds. But I do have fatigue and aching muscles and bones, which I never had before. Just hoping I can reduce my dose to 7.5 when I next speak to my cardiologist, as I don't think they are making me feel great. I would be interested to hear about splitting the dose, and/or taking it at night, as I take mine in the morning.
