Hi all, it’s time for the big decision, after my H/A &Stroke last year, I suffer from waves of depression, at present I am in talking therapy with my local hospital, however I don’t feel this is of any benefit to me, I have had more answers from all of you out there who have had symptoms like mine rather than continuing with this, I have to let them know by Monday if I am going to end this, what are your thoughts on talking therapy?, be brutal and honest .

To be honest, the demand for these services, while they can vary area to area, are generally very high and getting any type of help is frequently difficult. While I never accessed these services, if I had, my inclination would be to stick with it. I have a friend who is having therapy who has said that initially she didn't feel it was helping but as it went along she now believes it is helping.

Personally I’d continue - really buy into the process - best thing I ever did

What do you really think

Has it helped or has it been a waste of time , that's the only question and answer that is relevant and only you can answer the question.

I suppose I am lucky in that I can manage my situation, but can understand that not everyone can . this shi* isn't easy !

I hated my therapy sessions but continued with them. I feel I did benefit quite a lot. I think about them if I feel down and I feel better able to cope.

How many sessions have you had? As a counsellor naturally I would urge you to stick with it.I had therapy myself last year after my diagnosis and I found it very useful.

I found it hugely helpful, but not immediately. You have to go with it, and do tell them that you feel ambivalent and why.

Hi, processing such a life changing event is a long-term thing. I haven't suffered a stroke, but my HA has really limited my life and has affected those around me too. I have been lucky to have a therapist that I connect with very well and it has shortened the dive I am experiencing. If you choose to continue, be honest in what you say as that is what defines your journey and helps you navigate the landscape around you. The counsellor can't give you the insight, but can help you think about what you feel and how you express it. Good luck with which ever option you choose and be gentle on yourself 👍

Hi, keep it going, talk to them about EDMR, treatment for Trauma and PTSD, you could have this after such a significant event. My HA was 2 months ago and I having treatment privately due to the wait within the NHS . Stress / anxiety now 1 down from 10. Do research this therapy it really works, I still have my weekly talking therapy as well. Paul

Best thing I ever did. Allowed me to move of from being a victim to being able to move on.

IT depends an awful lot on who you get. I've had 3 sessions over the years and only one person was any help

Yes, I agree...as it seems to be more about a good match, rather than if they are good or bad,

I had 4 sessions (1 a week) of CBT after my HA 2 years ago. That was the length of the course. Complete waste of time - I really didn't appreciate being told to "be kind to yourself" for 4 weeks. My cardiologist has subsequently told me I have a form of PTSD but no other help has been offered.

Thankyou Alison, I have had 7 weeks of 3 different sections of therapy telling me to look at the other side of my H/A, and after 7 weeks I feel exactly the same as when I started, I have had 3 sessions this week alone, it feels like they have taken over my life, it feels like I can’t breathe.

Be safe take care

Regards John

Here's where you can sign up for self referred CBT online run by the NHS. iesohealth.com/en-gb . There are lots of companies offering counselling that charge a fortune; some better than others but the NHS one is free and fairly quick
