Diarrhea: Hi I have had diarrhea for... - British Heart Fou...
Diarrhea
Back to the doctor Danny462, have you lost any weight? I know we don't know your history, i think you could ask the doctor to give you a time frame as to how long it will take to go away and could they explain why. Keep the forum up dated. Sheena
I have been checking weight daily and it's been the same as last 3 years very little fluctuations I intend ringing doctors again on Friday and thanks for reply
It is probably the PPI you are on. I take pantaprazole (tecta) and will occasionally get the nasty diarhea from it and will have to stop for a while.
Hi , in my opinion, more likely to be the drug than a anything else, suffering slightly myself, but I have known other people ask for a different drug, hope this helps- Paul
I had it too. GP advised me to stop taking the Lansoprazole and that worked to the extent that, though my poos are still very loose, I only get one urgent call a day, regular as clockwork, just after breakfast. My current meds are edoxaban, bisoprolol, ramipril, atorvastatin and citalopram.
Thank you but how soon after taking lansoprazole did you start getting problems, I was on it about two months before I started getting diarrhea.
Only a few weeks I think. It hadn't been prescribed by the hospital's cardiology department I'd been under, but independently out of the blue by my GP's pharmacist, to help prevent any stomach problems that my other meds might cause, though I'd not had any such problems before or since stopping the Lansoprazole!
Same here my repeat prescription are done on line and then suddenly this new one appeared lansoprazole so I rang gp and was told that it was to counteract other meds which were acidic. Thanks a lot for your reply I will be ringing doc on Friday as I'm not working Friday's due to cov-19
Have you thought about, or have any knowledge of Insoluble fiber?
The shock of 4 heart attacks to my body triggered IBS, and the medication ate away my stomach lining causing erosive gastritis and duodenitis. I lost 10kg over 3 months because I was on the toilet passing just about everything 4-5 times a day. Not ideal because I'm naturally a lean guy (80kg). I got an emergency referral to a gastro which is when all the aforementioned came to light.
With treatment, diet and medication adjustments I'm mostly back to "normal" but the IBS is now with me for life unfortunately. It's now just about managing it.
Hi Voice what diet and medication changes did you receive? I was diagnosed with IBS years ago. That seems to be what they name it when they can't figure it out. After years of literally hell i stopped gluten and dairy just as a trial and the difference was huge. Wheat and dairy have changed so much through the years that more and more people cannot tolerate them.
My gastro put me on the FODMAPS diet. It's a LOT more than just wheat and dairy that triggers IBS symptoms (random things like avocado!), so I'd recommend downloading the FODMAP app to help you decide what to get when you're shopping for groceries.
Ironic thing was that after my heart attacks I focused on eating super "healthy" (mainly just cutting out super fatty/sugary foods, sodas, etc) and then focused on eating lots of greens and fruits, etc. Turns out it was that shift that kept me on the toilet for so long, because I was filling myself with FODMAPs! Guess you can't win!
FYI: you don't need to cut out dairy entirely. Just make sure you only consume lactose free dairy (humans have reduced amounts of lactase in our bodies - it's the enzyme that breaks down the sugar lactose in milk which messes with our stomachs. Lactose free milk has added lactase so the sugar is already broken down. Worth noting, we're also the only mammal that continues to consume milk after we're grown up).
I should have added that my stomach is still rejecting all the things I loved like yogurt. I can eat all the good things like porridge fish some red meat and chicken and apples and bananas ,and greens cannot drink tea or eat anything rich so eventually going out to eat won’t be much fun.
How they can call IBS -D a functional disorder obviously has never had it. Plus the mind gut connection is quite complicated. What has helped me through trial and error is eating as natural as you can, never over eat plus 200 mg of l- glutamine a day when you have the diarhea and slippery elm for pain. You might want l-glutamine 1 x week as maintenance.
Is glutamine on prescription ? One cardio nurse said my diarrhea was all in my mind. I found no help for this situation at all and was told it was unusual and most people’s side effects were mainly constipation. I went through 3 months of misery.
Hello Polly , no ....L Glutamine is a vitamin and actually an amino acid really works for healing the gut as slippery elm is good too. To get a hold on the chronic diarhea i am in Canada and use a BoulardiMax made by RenewLife. The key ingredient is sacharomyces boulardi which is a critical care probiotic. Absolutely amazing stuff and should be used for 2-3 days 1 to 3 a day then stop and move on to their regular probiotic for 2 wks. I hope this works as well with you as it has been 18yrs of trial and error for me to find something that works this well.
I had same symptoms with Lansoprazole
Thank you but how soon after taking lansoprazole did you start getting problems, I was on it about two months before I started getting diarrhea
Hey Danny i have gerd and started taking my ppi years ago but only off and on. The reason for this is at about two months i started to get the diarhea as a side effect. Now that i have a heart condition and asprin plus heart pills they wanted me to take it non stop for 6 -12 months. I stopped the ppi a week ago and the diarhea stopped too.
I was on it for about six weeks then it started I rang the pharmacist at my doctor and he changed it for a different drug that does the same job
Just had call from doctor she said to come off lansoprazole
I had that for 3 months after triple bypass. At my 3 month check up the cardiologist took me off all drugs apart from aspirin. I had anemia before and after op. Had all the tests they could not find the source. I take Spatone every morning and my blood tests of last week said I’m fine. I lost heaps of weight which I did not need to and now 7 months on am back to being myself. I could not tolerate any of the “prazoles”
I don't know why some doctors are so determined to not recognise side effects of drugs. You can always check it on drugs.com
