Hi, does anyone who takes furosemide have upset tummy. I Hi everyone
Does anyone who takes furosemide for water retention find that that it upsets their tummy. I do suffer from IBS anyway, but it had been fairly stable. However, since taking furosemide (and especially since increasing my dose) I seem to be constantly alternating between constipation and diarrhoea with painful cramps.
Thanks

A friend's son has Crohn's disease. To get a greater understanding I read up the Crohn's and Colitis literature. My understanding is that some diuretics may affect these conditions, including IBS. You need to talk to your GP but it may be worth calling the C&C helpline. I know my friend got a lot of assistance when his son was younger.
My Rheumatologist put me on Furosemide tablets 6 months ago. I only took them for 6 days, i had such terrible stomach cramps and constipation because of them.
I've got Diverticulitis and I.B.S and it made my pain so much worse. I ended up in hospital, because they thought I had a blockage. When the Doctor in the hospital saw that I was on Furosemide he told me not to take any more of them.
If i were you I would go and see your G.P
as soon as possible. I know that those paais can be crippling.
My Rheumatologist tried me on Methotrexate, but it caused problems with my blood count. So then i had to come off them.
Then he tried me on Sulfasalazine
but they are really harsh on your stomach. I couldn't keep any food down. I couldn't even sleep because of the pain, even though I take sleeping tablets, so i came off them.
Then he put me on a 6 week course of Prednisolone ( Steroids )and Duloxetine. I'm still on 30mg of Duloxetine a day, but not the
Prednisolone, because I've got Osteoporosis. And apparently Prednisolone thins the bones. xx
Thanks for that. I spoke to doctor today, he has increased my mebeverine ibs medication but kept my furosemide the same as that is working for the water retention.
They checked y bloods every couple of weeks at first, but haven’t done this for a while now. I have also noticed that my blood pressure is slightly on the lower side than it used to be too.
I am due to go into hospital for more scans in a couple of weeks so will get them to look at it too.
