Furosemide

Hi all! Hubbys furosemide has just been increased to 40 g twice a day due to breathlessness, coughing and spitting. He has developed diarrhoea ever since. I thought constipation was the usual side effect not diarrhoea! Has anyone else had this? Thanks for listening x

My late father took it without problem. You should contact your GP or ring 111 if worried.

I was on it post surgery when I developed an electrolyte imbalance. No problems. You need to contact 111 or you GP. Any chance he has picked up a bug - there a quite a few about now the weather had changed.

Sorry everyone! Im an idiot. Just remembered he is on an antibiotic at the minute. They are notorious for causing diarrhoea. My bad!

Glad to hear you've found the root of the problem but sorry to hear hubby is a having the problem in the first place, hopefully he'll be feeling better soon. I was recently on antibiotics and they made me really poorly.

I've been on furosemide for 18 years with no problems at all. You should see yoru GP, it nmay be a combination of things causing it.

Hi patio, can i ask did upping the furosomide to twice a day help? I am on 40mg once a day at the minute and although it gets rid of some water retention I still have swelling in my calve, feet and stomach. With terrible breathlessness too x

Hubby didnt have swelling, but xray showed fluid in his lungs. Breathlessness stil about the same, but he is coughing less and sleeping a bit better. I really believe the breathlessness is caused by bisoprolol, but gp wont listen to us.

I have asthma and was taken off bisoprolol years ago as it can cause wheezing.

Hi glider43. I went to doctors on Monday and he's changed my furosomide to twice a day. I have lost half a stone since yesterday morning. All fluid. Foot only slightly swollen tonight as I can see the mark where my sock was. X

Hi, my husband is on 20mg furosemide. He is waiting for AVR. He is worn out by coughing so the gp increased it to 40mg. his bp dropped to 96 and he was fainting, so had to be dropped to 20mg again. I’m glad we bought a home bp monitor as we can now keep an eye on it.

Re diarrhoea I find drinking about 150ml of Kefir every morning helps. It’s sold in Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
