Lockdown working

It’s fantastic that the lockdown is working to drive down the number of cases and subsequently fatalities. But what next ???? Surely, we can’t hide in our houses or in my case the pantry 🐷 much longer.

I really hope that once there is a resurgence in activity there isn’t a resurgence in transmission.

I watched the chief adviser on TV, basically they do not have a plan at present, it is going to be discussed in the next week or two. Not sure if this makes me feel uneasy. As you say, we cannot all stay locked down for ever, I personally think the "herd immunity" will be the only answer, along with FAR more testing.

in reply to

I reckon if the lockdown carries on past May, I’ll have more money in the bank than the Government.

The short, unpalatable answer is, that economically it can't. I totally understand health must come before money but we simply have to retain some sort of economy. I fear that businesses such as a garden Centre might go to the wall only to have the restrictions relaxed and for the infection to spread anyway, as it must for us to get herd immunity. Are self employed people like hairdressers supposed to stop working for months on end, maybe 6 or more? It will be interesting to see what the government does to pay them, I suspect they have delayed it until June in the hope they will be able to get back to work and they will have paid out £0. I heard a very good interview with Mervyn King, a much respected financier, who basically said he was very worried about the lack of economic experience in the current government, maybe we need to recall him in the same way Doctors are being recalled.

Be careful the government may take it if they are short of cash as they did in Greece in 2008.

I( think you mean Cyprus in 2013, when the Cyprus banking system closed for a number of days, when it reopened the banks deducted a "banking levy" from deposits

Your right, whichever way you look at it, it's awful. I have come across a few people who seem to think it will all be over in a couple of months or even less. Personally I reckon we will be lucky if the Pubs and restaurants and so on are open for Christmas, this is going to be a long tough haul.

in reply to

I reckon this will be the first of a few lockdowns until a vaccine is readily available.

in reply to

It might not even be possible to produce a vaccine?

To be honest I think by next weekend more restrictions will be brought in

If everyone stuck to the rules it would be ok but reports of people on the beach and in parks are coming in .

Easter next weekend as well .

Its hard I know but I am one of the many that are in the Shielded group and if staying in is what we need to be doing its a little price to pay to save lives .

Thay made it clear it would be a long haul

I live in a tiny hamlet yet there are non locals walking their dogs up my lane and my daughters farmland over looks a National Trust car park which is absolutely packed with cars and people, why are these idiots ignoring the rules and putting everyone at risk !!!

in reply tobantam12

I'll be honest most of the people who I have personally seen or heard of "breaking the rules" have been, shall we say, of advancing years. There was a big ruckass in Wilko's the other day when an old guy just decided to bypass all the distancing precautions, pushed in and dumped his shopping in front of the assistant, ignoring the "no mans land" (Wilkos are really strict here). The assistant shouted at him with obvious frustration "I am sick of "your lot" behaving like this, it's you we are trying to protect". She almost kicked him out bless her, minus his shopping. I have seen quite a few others just ignoring it and muttering about the war.

Can't blame the older generation where I live, it's predominantly the younger and middle aged Generation!

Might be a regional thing. Wonder how old the Scottish deputy health secretary or whatever her title is? I hear she has been caught visiting her holiday home for the second time, fantastic! Talk about a rule for one........

Scotland's chief medical officer Dr Catherine Calderwood has just been removed from the public briefings of the Coronavirus outbreak.

She has had a warning from the police.

Confined to your house.Lateguitarist.

in reply to2-10-0

Absolutely ridiculous. If people are not allowed out for exercise they will go mad. Going out to do this is NOT putting yourself or anyone else in danger (words of chief medical officer) and smacks of hysteria. I for one will keep going out running whatever.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

Will you continue running if the ruling is no exercise outside the house?

in reply toLezzers

I will yes. Gym is closed obviously, I consider it vital to my personal health to continue, as I was instructed to do very clearly at Rehab. I have felt myself get stronger and stronger over the past 15 months since my incident, and I do not intend under any circumstances to let it slip now. I also feel that it does not pose any threat to me or anyone else and that a ban of this type would suggest to me that the government would be losing the plot.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

Isn't that also a case of one rule for one? It only takes one person to break the rule and others will follow!!

in reply toLezzers

No it is a case of common sense. This is not going on a jolly to my second home this is for health reasons. Could you just inform me of exactly how I am helping to spread the virus by doing this??

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

I've no need to tell you how you're spreading the virus, I was just wondering how you would justify how it's OK for you to break the rules but not the elderly gentleman in Wilco's or the Scottish deputy health minister, its all a matter of opinion really!

in reply toLezzers

Yes please do? I go out my garden gate, I run on mainly quiet roads or footpaths, I give anyone I come up to a very wide berth, if necessary by running in the very quiet roads and seldom get within 10M of them let alone 2, then I go back through my gate, having had no contact whatsoever with anyone or anything.

So how exactly am I contributing to spreading the virus??

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

See previous response

in reply toLezzers

Sorry Lezzers I don't wish to be disrespectful that is not an explanation. At what part of my run am I going to spread the virus, I really have no idea. A doctor has stated that he also sees no threat, so please expand a little.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

It wasn't an explanation. The point is, if a ruling comes in that we should not exercise outside the home then we should adhere to the ruling without exception. The reason this ruling will become an 'instruction' is because people are not adhering to the current instruction. I get your frustration, I also live in a remote area and have been for my walk every night and have not met another soul. I agree it definitely is not good for our mental health but if one person does it then that encourages others and unless you live in a remote area with absolutely no neighbours, you will be seen! The sooner we can get this under control the sooner we can all get some semblance of normal life back! Small pain for long term gain, it's not about us as individuals it's about us as a whole!

in reply toLezzers

I would like to think that it would be a small pain, but the reality is likely to be that it will be for a very protracted period of time. I think you have probably answered your own question here! Anyway, they will have to catch me first, the force around here are notorious pie eaters.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

I'm really sorry you feel that way, but yes it will be protracted with the way the 'instruction' is ignored. The police being overweight isn't really a good argument for ignoring the instruction though, is it!! Enjoy your running 🏃

in reply toLezzers

I was just being facetious. I understand your though process but apart from being almost impossible to enforce and as you have said yourself would be largely pointless, I feel that if the government did impose this it would probably start to convey the impression that they were starting to get a bit desperate. I think there is already a general feeling that they have been caught on the back foot and would be better focusing their minds on how they are going to provide the testing that they have promised. I am not really sure if I personally think they have been a bit slow, the truth is more likely to be that we could all probably have been warned of this much sooner by the Chinese, with reports now that many more deaths have actually occurred than they are reporting and that this virus could well have been circulating sooner than they have said. They are a pretty horrible regime at the end of the day.

Enjoy your walk!

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply to

I haven't said anything is pointless, I think you're reading what you wish to read in my comments. So to make it clear, if the instruction is stay in, then 'stay in' is what we should do. Whether the government impose it because they're desperate or not is unfortunately not the issue, they probably are desperate.

At this point whatever the Chinese did or didn't do, or should or shouldn't have done is a bit immaterial, the time to look into that will come in due course. We can blame the governments lack of testing till the cows come home but if adhering to instructions is what we need to do then I'll certainly do it. Everytime, I hear of another death, I think of the family who has lost that loved one and I will do my bit, however small & however much it irks. I'm now off to the virtual bar for convivial company, you're very welcome to join!

in reply tostillaboveground

Well, can anyone REALLY believe that in the last 24 hours, they are reporting 3 deaths???? Wuhan has 11.9 million people in it, who are they kidding?? I have seen reports that thousands of urns have been seen.

As 2-10-0 says confined to house

However thay did just say thay dont want to brig those restrictions in unless absolutely necessary.

I am on my 2nd week and not going out is not fun although I have plenty to occupy myself

in reply toRose54

Such a draconian restriction would do very little to prevent the spread. As a Doctor rightly said yesterday there is very little chance of either spreading or contracting it whilst outdoors as long as the distancing rules are observed, which as far as I have seen during such activities as walking or running are being. There is also a responsibility to maintain the general health and well being of the general population. It would also be impossible to Police, this is not China, thankfully.

Watford Police have been handing out penalties as a friendly word goes not exist. The have closed the car park by Cassiobury Park after crowds and picnicking yesterday. Same at Stevenage Lake!

in reply toMichaelJH

I saw the aerial shots of some park or other, to be honest everyone there was at way more then the recommended distance from each other and I have to ask the question what harm are they actually doing?? Some of these people may live in small flats and for their own well being surely they need some release?

Although Watford is the third closest A&E to me I was sent a lot of fake news about the reason for the closure.

MichaelJH profile image

The Guardian was correct in its report. The texts and WhatsApp messages I received had very different reasons! There was a long period between the closure and the reason being given.

Shocking

I will have to take the oxygen cylinder off the welding kit, just in case.

Lezzers profile image

Jo, I think Michael is agreeing with you. I think he's actually saying that he got a lot of fake news via text and WhatsApp trying to say the oxygen wasn't an issue.

It was also on the news. But the news confused me a bit as they said the issue didn't affect any patient care but they sent a few patients off to other hospitals, or have I got that wrong?

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply toLezzers

No, that's right. That allowed the fake news to take off!

Milkfairy profile image
MilkfairyHeart Star in reply toMichaelJH

It is not unknown for technical problems to occur with the oxygen supply.

It can be because of a drop in pressure and nothing to do with the actual supply.

Every hospital has a huge tank full of liquid oxygen onsite.
