Hope he’s ok, and also that you weren’t close enough to have been at risk.
And as a psychology nerd, just wanted to add that, if people use humour, it’s probably because it’s their way of coping mentally.
It’s unlikely it’s personal ‘against’ the recipient, instead it is usually about how the giver feels & needs to cope.
It’s unlikely they’re laughing about illness or death, it’s more likely to be noticing the strangeness of life.
And lastly, a few smiles can sometimes help our mood & community spirit a little, so long as they are not jibes.
I hope this doesn’t feel lecturing or patronising, i just wanted to help you & others not feel more upset - we all react differently, and it is often just a coping mechanism.
Let's all make allowances for poor Boris. No-one's perfect. As the Independent has pointed out, when dealing with EU requests to join in commissioning ventilators, it is so easy to overlook those messages that land by mistake in your spam folder. As for Dyson, well ... Vacuum cleaners, Ventilators ... When you're doing a spot of online shopping, just takes a small slip of the finger - let's face it, we've all been there.
Hi Prada
I am sorry to hear about your friend but I have to agree with Tealgreen. I am sure everyone here thinks Covid 19 is a serious issue.
People use a range of ways of coping but I believe for many of us humour is an important and useful strategy for dealing with any issue however serious or tragic. It is precisely because it is so serious, we mentally benefit from taking a break from the worry and anxiety. Like Tealgreen I am not meaning to lecture but I am a psychologist and it came as a relief to learn how normal and potentially beneficial humour can be and not something we should feel guilty about (as long as it is not malicious or hurtful of course!)
Guess from some of the replies that humour doesn’t always translate via email or internationally - but please don’t let it stop you
🤣 Pat x
Seems I missed the joke(s) !!!
I’m one of those people to whom humour doesn’t come naturally (I tell punchlines before the joke!). But I love it when people make me smile - thanks all. 😂😂😂
But I also know jokes can upset sometimes, so stand by my comments - whilst still having a good laugh at myself for missing the joke ! 😆
