Ramipril cough : Anybody else... - British Heart Fou...
Ramipril cough
The ramipril cough is very well known!! How long have you been taking ramipril and how long does your GP want you to continue to take it before considering an alternative?
Hi there, Sorry , should have mentioned advice for husband, he was prescribed Ramipril on hospital discharge after his cardiac arrest, but his cough is becoming more aggressive, especially during night , going to speak to gp tomorrow maybe get him swapped to another medication, Candarsartan??
My husband was on lisinopril for bout 15 years & he was switched to candesartan bout 5 years ago because of his coughing. He's recently had the doseage increased and this has really made a difference to his breathing, he does still cough a fair bit but after extensive tests we've been told its a heart cough! He was given furosmide which did help reduce the coughing but he's recently been taken off that due to BP issues.
Apart from the cough I hope your husband is doing OK, did he do an ICD download and contact his ICD clinic?
Thanks so much for your advice , really appreciate it , hes doing well considering what hes been through, gets a little frustrated from time to time with some of the hurdles , but going to take time , just thankful still here x
Sorry just caught end of message , download all clear from icd , went to gp , stressed I should have called ambulance, wont hesitate next time . Think probably dramatic bp drop that caused it , but unsure x
Glad to hear his ICD didn't fire. Do you have a blood pressure monitor, if not I'd recommend getting one just to keep an eye on his BP and if it does go a bit low normality drinking water and elevating his legs usually brings it up quite quickly (assuming he's not on any fluid restrictions).
Yes, its a side effect. Get something else
Yes a pain can’t take canderstat cough mostly at night really tiring along with hubby snoring
H/a March 2019 stent fitted, then over active thyroid and found I have oesteoporosis 🤨
Hi, what treatment are they giving you for osteoporosis? I have just had a fall and a hip replacement and had a bone scan and now have an appointment regarding this at the hospital. Thanks
Food advise and take calcium vits
however my mum and aunt took calcichew so in the process of finding our about it
Yes. I had a horrendous cough with Ramipril. Changed drugs and the cough disappeared. I'd definitely recommend a change.
Me too
What time of day does your husband take ramipril? I take mine at 9pm every day now and has helped with coughing. I used to take mine in the morning.
Hi, also put on ramipril after surgery developed a cough only way to stop suck a polo! Surgeon changed me onto candarsartan cough stopped.
Hope you can get it sorted,
My husband had the ramipril cough following his HA. It’s very irritating. I think it must be the cheapest because it seems to be the go to drug for everyone at the beginning. He now takes enalapril. There are lots of alternatives so do ask the GP ASAP. Coughing is tiring ...for everyone 🙂
Yes change
It's a common side effect. I was really happy when they took me off of it - the cough cleared up after about a week.
I was given Ramipril & developed a cough almost immediately, I spoke to my GP and he changed it immediately. I take 4 drugs to control my hypertension but the docs are happy with that.
My husband cardiac arrest was in October and he had cough so bad they changed his meds 3 weeks ago cough has nearly gone so get yours changed hope you feel better soon
Yes, like others I say get it changed. Ramipril is a first port of call for a GP when prescribing a blook pres sure medication. There are many alternatives. I tried a few, most having side effects, eventually being prescribed Losartan which has been marvellous over the past nine years.
Appointment today to change , thanks for your advice
Yes Ramipril can give a horrible cough and runny nose, I changed to Candestartin and cough went immediately but now my nose runs more.
Hi
I had bad cough will rampril only after it was increased to full dose. They changed my meds to valastartin (spelling) since then had no problems.
Hope this helps
Hi, I also had an annoying cough with ramipril then my consultant changed me to Sacubitril/Valsartan one tablet twice daily, cough disappeared.
Cough cleared up within days when changed to Losartan.
Good to know, thankyou
Had exactly the same (well known) issue: was moved on to Losartan = problem solved_Pablo 😎⚽️🍷
Yes I had a horrendous , continual cough. I had to change to Candesartan and all is well now.
l had to stop taking it as it caused me a horrendous cough ,there are otherbp meds out there
Thanks for asking the question ! I have just started taking it and so far I am ok. Funnily enough though the pharmacist rang me last night to ask if I was ok. However your question has prompted me to get my wife to ask our GP whether the cough she constantly has is due to her medication for diabetes.
Best wishes to your husband.
Thankyou so much for your comments, best wishes to you and your wife xxxx
I had an annoying night cough when I first started ramipril but only occasional.I do find I cough if I sing too much at church...you know Carol services and the like.I take a water bottle each week which helps. Not nearly as bad as many but a cough is a well known side effect and I know a couple of people who had to change because of it.
Thankyou appreciate your advice :))
I've been on ramipril 10mg for years and have often had a dry itchy cough on a night. I only ever use honey to calm the coughing as more medication is not an option for me. Give it a try
Thanks for advice , will give it a go :))
