And we have a date...

We have a date for my fiancé’s bypass surgery, he has to be at hospital next Sunday for surgery on the 27th 😳

The nhs are doing it privately as he became “urgent” and this way was much quicker.

Glad to have a date but terrified and nothing in place! Fiancé has gone to bits and for some reason is obsessing over jogging bottoms!

Best wishes, hope all goes well. Put your faith in the Surgeon & his support people, they have done it before.

It can sound very daunting but you have to put your faith & your trust in those who will be doing the op. Don't forget this is a much more routine op these days and is something the staff do on a day to day basis. There are plenty of us here who have been through this previously - some recently, others from more than a few years ago. For myself I would say it was worse for my wife & family than it was for me. There are some older threads on here which are worth reading and hope some of the others may be able to help by pointing you to them.

Hi Chickenlou, take a deep breath and RELAX! Although it is a huge and daunting prospect for you both it is very routine for the surgeons. My hubby who was 69 at the time had a quadruple bypass almost 2 years ago and is doing well now.

There is a good older post on here about preparation for coming home from hospital and items people found useful. We were given an excellent book by the hospital that answered many of our questions but never be afraid to ask questions.

Jog bottoms are great but front fastening tops are also easier to put on than tee- shirts.

Best wishes to you both.

Janma is spot-on about the joggers and front fastening tops and I completely understand your fiance's seeming obsession with joggers (and that obsession will very soon escalate to other easy to put on and wear clothing). He wants to know he's prepared with clothing he doesn't have to ask for help putting on - it's not 'just a guy thing' as every man and woman I know who've had major surgery has the same worry.

There are, as other commenters have noted, some excellent 'how to prepare for homecoming' discussions but one thing I've not seen on any of the discussions is an item every person I know who has had any sort of torso surgery or shoulder injury swear by - a device designed to make putting socks on less difficult. Look for 'sock assist' or 'sock aid' or 'easy sock pull-up' for the dozens of different makes of these incredibly helpful devices.

I still use mine (after a catastrophic fall resulted in my dominant arm being 'wrecked' from fingertips to collarbone - nearly four years on I've recovered 95% use, phew!) and wow is it a wonder device!

Wish you both all the best, if you haven’t already purchased a V pillow get one now , there a God send 💜

I went in on a Thursday had a Quadruple bypass on the Friday morning and was home the following Wednesday. Just do everything they tell you to do and try to be positive. Good luck.

Good luck to you and your fiancé.

Here's a link to a booklet that Guy's Hospital gives to patients following a heart bypass. It's full of good advice and gives you a god idea of what to expect.

Southampton Hospital, where I had my bypass, uses a slightly different booklet but unfortunately it isn't online.

Wishing you and your fiance all the very best. I had a triple bypass at St Thomas's last October and my recovery has gone well. I see that someone else has posted a link to the booklet given out by Guy's and St Thomas's. I strongly recommend following the advice given in that. The surgery is a daunting prospect but stay strong, I'm sure that all will go well.

Good luck to you both, I am sure everything will go well. Don't forget to look after yourself also, it's okay to think of yourself as well as the patient. Take care, there is lots of support on this site.

I remember a cardiac surgeon saying to me it’s such a straight forward operation for them and they do it everyday- that thought really helped me 9 months ago. You do have to have something to obsess about that’s natural. The important thing is that life post op gets better and better- I didn’t know I had a prob until I ended up having a mild ha and then being kept in hospital awaiting surgery- I was running that morning!!! I have learnt so much about myself as well as hearts- that’s probably my obsession now! Good luck to your partner and any q’s - this is the place for answers.

That's great news you have a date although I can imagine how scary and daunting it must be.

I hope it all goes well. Sports Direct are great for jogging bottoms by the way!

Thank you all for your kind and helpful replies 😀

We are now getting organised... I think! We have brought joggers and pjs so that’s a start.

We have also brought a memory foam v pillow and a nice snuggly throw to put on a 2nd hand recliner we’ve purchased.

My partners mood is very up and down and he’s been snappy all day, but I understand why...it’s so out of character but he’s terrified.

Thank you all again xx
