Tomorrow the 28th Dec. it will be exactly 3 years since I suffered a heart attack while out walking. This is a bit frustrating as it will also be my 97th parkrun and I had hoped to celebrate my 100th run on the anniversary.
I started out on parkrun on 21st Oct 2017 having only recently completed both the cardiac rehabilitation and the Wycombe Wanderers FFIT programmes. I had no idea how I would cope with running having not run seriously since the 1993 Wycombe half marathon, but completed the course by part walking and jogging finishing in a time of 37:48
My times have continuously improved over the 96 runs with the last 3 all sub 27 minutes (I have only achieved this 5 times in total, all this year) so I'm hoping for an anniversary PB!
Parkrun has been a revelation in my recovery journey giving me the the support and encouragement when I needed to keep going and even push onto greater distances.
Thank you to everyone at parkrun, I wouldn't have the confidence in myself or fitness levels I now enjoy without you - it's been a blast and here's to the next 3 years!
Well done, it's my anniversary tomorrow too, except that for me it's my first. I'll be stopping taking ticagrelor tomorrow, so will be considering going out running as opposed to being in the back bedroom on a treadmill. Don't fancy it with being on the blood thinners as if I trip over something and cut myself will look like a car crash victim !
Parkrun #97 - a little disappointed as I really gave this my best shot to celebrate my HA anniversary with a PB, using all my experience from over the last 96 runs on how to run the Wycombe Rye course. It was not too be and I finished in 27:11; 39 seconds behind my best time - though I suspect a detour made the course a little longer!
I think a lot people are put off because they think of it as a race, it's not, it's a run/jog/walk around the park.
There is no pressure to 'perform', you are equally excepted if you come in first or last. The biggest benefit I have found at my local parkrun is the support and encouragement from both the organisers and fellow runners.
