My mum has heart failure and eats what she likes, but obviously doesn’t eat lots of junk as she’s 81 and won’t be going to a burger or pizza joint any time soon.

I had a heart attack and have changed what I eat to more of a traditional Mediterranean diet (no sugar, lots more veg, very little to no pasta and more fish).

I’ve cut out pizza and chips altogether which are not part of a traditional mediterranean diet except in very small amounts if at all. Most modern pizza has nasty trans fats and obviously way too carb heavy.

Chips/fries fried in vegetable oil are terrible for your health. But I do nick one off my son every week lol

In general, yes I have stopped eating lots of things I love, but I am doing it with a hope to increase my longevity.

Didn’t know pasta was unhealthy

Traditional mediterranean diet had only small amounts of pasta, typically a small amount as a starter. Sunflower oil is bad for you, olive oil is better.

Have you got any research evidence to support your comments?

Using the phrase ' sunflower oil is bad for you ' is unhelpful in isolation. It then becomes your opinion.

It is fine to have an opinion we all have them but that's all it is an opinion not a fact.

Does anyone seriously think fries from mcdonalds etc fried in sunflower oil are healthy? If not, is it the potato or the oil that is bad for you?

Could you kindly provide some research evidence to support your view that pasta and sunflower oil are not a healthy option for heart patients?

Otherwise it remains your opinion alone.

I don't think there's enough room to list all the favourite foods I've given up. But on the other hand I have found a number of new foods that I enjoy. But nothing can ever replace a full cooked breakfast

With Black pudding.

I only eat black pudding or a cream tea once a year. However I really savour every morsel 😊

Hi

Agree Cooked Breakfast

Or a Hollands, Meat & Potato Pie

In Moderation

I do dislike people telling me I should only eat what's good for Me and as Milkfairy wrote earlier it's all a matter of opinion without Evidence. Which is currently mixed !

I agree. What I eat is completely my choice. I've done the research after my heart attack and made the changes I felt was appropriate - sadly the cooked breakfast was the first causality. Having said that my dad had a cooked breakfast every day of his life, and he lived to the age of 85 with good health throughout his life. Who knows! I don't, I just feel that the changes I've made are beneficial, and that's all that matters really!

Hi I still have cooked breakfast every Sunday , poached egg one grilled bacon with fat removed with grilled tomato and mushrooms. I enjoy it with one slice of toast and marmalade .

Hi yasyass

I don't eat chips and I eat healthy don't smoke or drink

And I still have HF so unless you are told what to eat by your cardiologist or nurse then eat and enjoy.

I don’t do potatoes, rice or pasta, only very very rare. Only thing I do enjoy is old fashioned baked Sourdough bread; for the life of me, I won’t stop that, if I had to, I would. I found stopping alcohol, smoking and other vices very easy to do it’s all psychological and one needs to be determined mentally and you’ll overcome anything!

I thought hf patients had to eat some carbs and just wondering has anyone cut cheese out thanks

I’m also a type one diabetic insulin dependant. Those carbs: potato, rice & pasta are advisable only in small potions as they push the blood sugar levels beyond where they should comfortably be.

Everything in moderation. To make somewhat healthier chips, cut them thick, boil them first to almost done. Dry and lay on a baking tray. Spray very lightly with olive oil and bake until crispy. Restrict to maybe once a month.

As my husband insists on things like pies , pasties and quiches I simply take all pastry off mine and restrict the "baddies" to once every couple of months. Having said that I NEVER buy take aways or ready made food; not even fish and chips. It's so easy to make your own pizza on a slice of bread or even on grated cauliflower or potato. Even simple bolognese now has less than 1/8 of the meat I used to use; all replaced with finely cut vegetables; no bought sauces just a pack of passata or canned tomatoes mashed up. In an emergency, we even had fish and chips ONCE last year; for me just 6 chips and the batter taken off the fish and served with home made parsley sauce.

Sainsburys do a crustless quiche that might be worth trying.

So do Tesco but I think there's just too much cheese. I'll make my own . Hubby will be happy with the crust and i can take it off.

I love chips too and I still have them once a week (moderation in all things)potatoes good, oil not,so I use the lowest fat contents in a frozen chip (icelands,3g per 100 g)and do them in the air fryer or,raw chips and sprayed with a little spray light olive oil and done in air fryer or on a tray single layer in oven .They are still good and go lovely with your egg and beans.

I cook most stuff in the air fryer veg burgers chips but try mostly eat veg wth anything

Why don't you invest in an air fryer. You use very little oil and can eat all the chips you want then, without feeling guilty.

My mother’s favourite phrases were“a little of what you fancy does you good”, “everything in moderation” “you can have too much of a good thing”. I live by those. Maybe that’s why I’m still here. My heart attack was genetic on dad’s side of the family.

True how long since u had heart attack I think stress causes more ha than food but think it is stil wise to look after ourselves

Make your own. Every now and then it’s not too bad. You don’t need lots of oil just a drizzle over them. My downfall is crisps, I’d eat a family bag in one sitting. I’ve not banned them just use a bowl to measure out and put the big bag full back in the cupboard.
