hi

since having a heart attack and stent in feb this year ive been eating what I think was healthy but from time to time I have say a pizza from the co op and on the package they have the colour coded content amount guide. The one I get has all the fat, sugar ect in either the green or low band the only one high is the salt.i know we are all supposed to eat low fat ect but are foods like this where the fat is in the green ok band ok???

Can you post a photo of the label? It’s hard to know without seeing it.

All low fat processed foods are loaded with sugar and personally I would avoid anything that says low fat on the label.

They could also write "loads of sugar to cover up the crap taste" but that probably won't sell as well.

Would it not depend on how often you're eating it? A one off now & then is not gonna hurt too much is it? Far better to have one now and then, if you start craving it because you're depriving yourself are you more likely to eat it even more? If that makes sense.

I’ve had a look at this pizza

Co-op Irresistible Limited Edition Wood Fired Proscuitto & Rocket Pizza 450g It has orange and green indicators apart from the red for salt.

If you were to eat the whole pizza you would be eating 12g of Saturated Fat and 16g of sugar

per 1/2 pizza (cooked) approx. 202g)

Energy

14g

The issues we all face when looking at the traffic light system is just how food manufacturers manipulate the labelling

Things to look out for

Portion Size vs the amount you will actually eat! In this instance are you looking to eat 1/4 of the pizza or the whole one

Fat vs Saturated Fats

It’s best to limit Sat Fats

Low Fat can often have v high sugar content as Fergusthegreat says

Processed foods are just a lot rubbish

Making things sound healthier than they are This pizza is made with Sourdough but a wholemeal base would be better. Health bars are v bad in this respect

Unusual ingredients

Palm oil pops up in all sorts of food. It’s so high in Sat Fat. This is my particular pet hate. Who ever wants to eat Palm oil! I’d rather choose which treats I’m going to have than eat Palm Oil.

Excuse the length of this post. I hope it helps.

I’m not trying to be a killjoy- far from it. I like to be aware of what I eat so I can choose when I want to indulge!

Take care.

Salt is the one thing you should avoid the most

For me the correct response to that is 'absolutely, spot-on and well said, Nevil!'.

But not every heart patient is the same and avoiding sodium and salt is something only the medics can advise a patient to do.

I have two conditions mandating sodium/salt restriction to 1500mg per day with the very occasional bump to 2Kmg (recurrent pericarditis, pericardial effusion) for my particular 'brand' of the conditions - but other pericardial patients are not restricted the way I am.

Not to sound too pedantic but it's important every one gets his/her medical team to advise, especially about sodium/salt daily intake.

A bit of what you fancy does you good! We have limited sugar in our diets but otherwise go for variety and smaller portions.

Why not make your own rather than buying processed? You'll then be aware of exactly what's in it.
