Yay asking for a referral from my Gp worked.

So although I have an appointment at my local hospital next month, I asked my Gp to refer me to Brighton as the surgeon there did my previous bypass surgery. Although my Gp was reluctant and I had to chase up that he had referred me I had a letter yesterday with an appointment next week. I also had a shock as the letter stated that I needed a prep op assessment! Thankfully this coincided with an answer phone message stating that this was not required.... Phew.

My question is can you guys help me compile a list of questions to ask the surgeon or let's face it more likely one of his team.

*Facts.... I was 51 when I had a heart attack and quadruple bypass in 2017 I have genetic heart disease (my father has it), his father died of a heart attack. Prior to the event I was working and not showing any symptoms at all.

*I had a heart attack nearly 3 months ago whilst out walking my dogs.

*I've had a cardiovascular magnetic resonance scan and the only information that was given to me was that exercising did not bring on a heart attack.

*I've had an angiogram, no stents.

*I've been told I can be treated medically and was put on Ticagrelor as well as other medicines already taking.

*I was told this week by my Gp that I have Angina (first I've heard) and to use Nitrate spray when I get any symptoms.

What do I need to ask the doctor? Your help would be appreciated....

My work are initiating a health review meeting and talking about ill health retirement etc....

Hello Frenchbulldogsx - well done for getting the appointment you think will help you most, persistence has worked.

The following BHF list is a starting point for compiling questions: bhf.org.uk/informationsuppo...

Other questions that spring to my mind are :

1. Following the bypass and angiogram what is the state of my heart - I am wondering if any arteries are partially blocked which may be what is being referred to when you have been told 'bring managed with medication'.

2. Do you need any further tests like an echo to assess how well your heart is functioning

3. Cardiologists thoughts on ways to minimise future problems and what symptoms to watch out for and how to respond

4. Do you need further reviews by Cardiologist after your next appt

On question of work are you happy to go to meeting on your own or do you want to seem support from a Trades Union Rep which I would recommend. Are you happy to consider I'll health retirement (ask what's on offer) or do you want to continue working. If you want to continue working and your job is having a negative impact upon your help can any adaptations be made to your role or working pattern which would help you.

Just a few thoughts which I hope will get you started

Thank you very much, that is very helpful.

I have been told that as my condition is genetic and I already followed a healthy diet, don't smoke or drink or eat wheat products. I exercise regularly that I cannot do any more other than lose a few pounds.

I've been told to use nitrate spray if I have chest pains or jaw which I do on occasions but have never used the spray.

I thought the cardiac resonance scan was more thorough than the echo? But I am still waiting on the full report.

I will write down your very good ideas of which I hadn't thought of a few. 😊

Have a fantastic weekend.

The only thing I'd add to Nathan's excellent suggested questions is: 'What do you feel is causing the angina?'

I had my angiogram and stents in Brighton as well. I found the consultant to be very good and well respected. The only thing is that you have to remember it's a teaching hospital and you may well be surrounded by students! Good idea to take in your list of questions as suggested by others. Good luck.

Hi

Oh yes when I had a quadruple bypass there I was surrounded by many doctors and they were like buses once one group left another came along!!

I actually have my appointment at Hove clinic which is much easier to get to than Brighton.

Thank you 😁
