CoQ10 and Blood Thinning Drugs.

That is interesting, just had a little search and found this from The Mayo Clinic ( if the link fails)

Whilst it may be good for some heart conditions, other illnesses, and possible issues with statins, there is a note of caution:

“Interactions

Possible interactions include:

Anticoagulants. CoQ10 might make blood-thinning drugs, such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), less effective. This could increase the risk of a blood clot.”

Always check with your Dr before taking any supplement if you are taking other drugs.

Many years ago there was discussion about prescribing CoQ10 with statins. This is probably why it did not happen. A good reminder why us hearties should always check before adding over the counter medications and supplements to our prescribed medications.

Hi. My husband is on Warfarin and he takes Ubiquinol, a form of Q10. He was already taking it when he started Warfarin and everyone from GP to Cardiologist to Anticoagulant Clinic said it’s fine. Just keep the dose constant or if you change get your INR checked to ensure it’s within range. It seemed to help his heart, as measured by EF, (he has Dilated Cardiomyopathy) so he’s continuing to take it.

Same with me, except I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The Coumadin clinic I go to noted all my medications, as well as my GP & all heart docs, no one has suggested I stop. I was taking CoQ10 before I started Warfarin as well. I think I feel better with it, and it doesn't seem to affect my INR, so I'll just stick with it.

I don’t take warfarin. I chose to have a tissue valve replacement to avoid it.
