Dear Barbieeg

It’s a difficult question to answer as medication effect people in different ways.

I presume that you are talking about side effects as the drugs primary use is well documented in the leaflet that comes with it, basically it helps remove excess water.

The effect on me was the same, certainly urinating more than usual, my breathless was diminished , the side effects were very short term with me { others cannot tolerate it at all } they included , headache, dizziness and general weakness.

I hope the drug does exactly what it’s been prescribed to you for, and that you suffer no side effects, or at the very lest that they are mild.

Take care

Thank you for your reply. No side effects as yet

Hello :-)

It is true that tablets can give people different side effects along with getting none at all

For me I found when I took them within 30 to 40 minutes I would need to be using the toilet to empty my bladder and this would go on 3 to 4 hours till it would steady down so been near a toilet was important

After 4 months I have started with a upset stomach however I am not sure if this is to do with this med or not , needing the toilet to urinate was though

But as I say this was just how it affected me you may be totally different :-)

I hope they do suite you , I always think we must try these things if they have been prescribed to see how we get on as they do help :-)

Let us know how you get on with them :-) x

Morning,

Have been on Furosemide for the past 5 years, 40mg taken every morning. As BeKind as said you need to a toilet near by for 2-3 hours. If I have an early appointment tend to take when I get home. Or know where the toilets are!

Hope you have no difficulties with the drug.

Best wishes Pauline

I am on 80 at 40mg twice a day. Suits me fine . I get in dire straits with 40mg with awful swelling in feet and legs and extreme breathlessness .

Hello Gladwyn

I was on 80mg when I came out of hospital, but at my 6 week check surgeon put it down to the 40mg I was a bit nervous but he said my heart was now strong enough to cope and 40 would be fine, 5 years on and so far so good. Have my 5 year review in June, have an echocardiogram haven’t had one in the last couple of years because of the pandemic. So when I see my Cardiologist we will see what he says. 🤞

Best wishes Pauline

My heart has never been mentioned! The water in my system has me hobbling about with swollen feet with shoes that are too tight as a result but if I take them off they will spread out even more. Yes I’ve taken larger sizes with me when out. I was given 80 McGovern 25 years ago and within 10 days felt 10 years younger as I could happily move about again. I moved to a different area and they chopped it down to 40 and made my life a misery. I forgot to say a few months ago a dr finally realised how the water was affecting my breathing most of all. And have me back the 80mg!

Morning Gladwyn,

I am so sorry you have such a struggle with water retention. Before my surgery I was in hospital for 7 weeks and on a diuretic drip twice a day I lost 64lb in weight! I looked like the Michelin X man!

I really sympathise with you I know how hard it was climbing stairs was so difficult. My heart was so weak it couldn’t pump hard enough to get rid of the fluid. I now have a tissue replacement valve, (pigs) and with my 40mg furosemide daily I am ok.

Best wishes Pauline

I’m so glad it worked out for you in the end Pauline. It must have been horrendous though going through the process. I’m still reeling at the 64lbs!!!!

It’s one H… of a way to lose weight 😂 it was like Niagara Falls had to have blood tests daily to check on my kidneys, my potassium used to drop every couple of days and I had the worst drink to take to put it back then the cycle would start again, now I am paranoid about water retention. Hope your 80mg keeps yours under control.

Best wishes Pauline

You certainly went through hell but got sorted in the end. I can understand you feeling paranoid about water retention!

I’m apparently the possessor of a triple amount of iron in my blood and they think it’s the fault of the furosemide. I’m praying it’s not as it will mess me up totally if they take me off it. One consultant at hospital over Xmas said it was nonsense lol he had never heard of furosemide doing that so fingers crossed he is right. 😱🙏

Well that’s a new one😂 will have my fingers crossed it’s not the furosemide. I have said before when we take our medication it’s like walking a tightrope between keeping our hearts ticking and putting other things out of kilter.

Best wishes Pauline

My husband has been taking 40mg a day for about three years and other than an extra trip or two to the loo he’s had no side effects or problems at all. Hope all goes well for you.

The only thing I would add to previous replies is that I have quite low bp, and furosemide lowers it further, so it caused me to have quite a bit of lightheadedness. After six years I was able to stop taking it as I was put on dapagliflozin, a heart failure medication which is also a diuretic, so was able to discontinue the furosemide.

I think to take Furosemide you need a good sense of humour & geography.

You need the humour because of the number of times you need the loo - I regularly comment I'm playing University Challenge and this is my starter for 10, this was when I was on high doses but have reduced to 80mg per day now.

Geography - knowing everywhere you can find a loo. Made worse in the first stages of Covid as most closed their facilities, had to make sure I carried an extra empty bottle.

Not what you're looking for?
