A friend has just found out he's got atrial fibrillation, he is an lgv driver, just wondering if he has to let dvla know as when I was diagnosed with heart disease and Angina and even after my double bypass the dr has always said I didn't need to let dvla know.
AF - DVLA : A friend has just found out... - British Heart Fou...
AF - DVLA
For the conditions you mention they are not notifiable for a car licence although you have to cease driving if driving brings on angina. They are for HGV/PSV licences.
HGV/PSV licences are totally different and his licence will be revoked. It can, however, be reinstated if the underlying cause has been identified, the AF had been controlled for three months and EF is greater than 40%. Not doing so is a criminal offence and any insurance will be invalid.
I think this guy's pal just has AF the other things are his own diagnoses. gov.uk/arrhythmia-and-driving
Check the DVLA website or contact the drivers medical unit. They will advise you.
MICHAELJH Is correct in all respects. 👍
YES it is notifiable to the DVLA.
For all reasons mentioned for driving HGV/LGV. Also question may be put on driving a car!!
I have AF and I am an HGV/lgv Driver.
I am still allowed to drive HGV.
U can usually continue to drive a car until the person has completed medical checks.
If they fail the tests BOTH HGV and car licence will be revoked!!
However if they pass standards for car they can continue to drive car but not HGV.
However HGV/LGV will be revoked Completely until or if medical standards can be met.
Failing to inform DVLA Can also result in £1,000 + fine.
Plus insurance invalid
Note that the if the "friends" GP or doctors /Consultant have told them not to drive especially HGV. A note will be placed on their medical records to flag 🚩 this.
This will be the GP Protecting his own interests. So no come back on doctor.
Then if DVLA are not informed this is also a separate offence.
