I’ve recently (10 weeks ago) had a Mitral Valve Repair with Annuloplasty and also a Triple Bypass. They used the Chest Artery and veins out of each leg for the Bypass. I’m doing really well except for my left leg wound. I’m just a bit concerned because it still feels numb to touch along the length of the scar. My other leg feels ok. Does anyone have any experience of this or any idea if it may be a problem I need to get looked at.
Kind regards
David

Numbess along an incision is normal as some of the nerves have been cut, feeling should reurn over the next few months. This applies to most surgical incisions, not just legs.
They could not harvest from my legs for my quadruple because of PAD. However, in 2008, I fractured my femur (ouch 😭) and had plates inserted. There were off sensations for a while but it settles, with what you cannot get on prescription, time. The important thing is to keep mobilising to avoid restrictive scar tissue.
I think it is all down to luck, for any cut into the skin has the potential to damage nerves. I went through a triple heart bypass last June and part of my left breast, between mid point and nipple, is quite numb and has been since the day of the operation. Where the vein was remover from the left leg is generally back to normal, but for the last 2 inches by the ankle, the skin sensation is quite numb. I was warned about this and to be pair, it really has no issues for me. I notice the chest numbness the most have no idea whether a female might find that numbness or loss of feeling in such a position a bigger problem. I guess I can say that as a trade off for excellent health, is a small price to pay and therefore just deal with it and try to completely ignore it. It may get better over the years by I doubt it after 15 months
Glad you are doing well and keep fit and try and maintain a good weight.
Thanks for your reply. I totally agree that it’s a small problem compared with how I was pre-op. The improvement has been fantastic. Kind regards David
Hi Dave. I think the sensation might last a few more weeks. I'm only speaking from my husband's experiences. The feeling along the leg where they took the veins out came back on Valentine's Day!! He had the op on 13th November last year.
bypass was done in 1995, and either Side of my scar still feels numb down a narrow margin, it's nothing at all to worry about, hope you have a speedy recovery, and don't forget 10 weeks isn't long into your recovery. Just be kind to yourself and take care x
I'm 23 months post triple CABG and I still have some numbness around the leg scar - particularly down by my ankle. It is normal. It does improve but nerves grow so slowly that it'll be a while. Provided you don't get an infection and/or pain, its just a case of stick with it. You are in this for the long term!
