Is an iodine supplement a good idea?

Does anyone have any information on iodine supplements? I read that iodine in the form of Kelp is good for HF but not sure whether to try it. I can’t find any interactions with other medications but if it is such a good thing, then why don’t more people take it?

Something to ask your medical team about. My husband has HF, I've never heard of anyone taking it but even if they were it doesn't mean it would be suitable for all. Let us know what your medical team say about it, if you don't mind.

If I can get any solid information I will share it of course. I don’t actually have a medical team anymore. I just get my (many) tablets from my GP. I haven’t seen a consultant for a couple of years at least and I don’t have a cardiac nurse to turn to. That was why I was hoping somebody here may have had knowledge of this supplement but I don’t want to take it if it could be detrimental to my condition!

Were you ever referred to a nurse? If you were, they usually have a phone number you can contact them on even though you're no longer with them. As there are so many different medical conditions or multiple conditions that cause HF it's difficult to do a comparison. You could ring the BHF nurses tomorrow for advice, they're always very helpful.

Thanks for this. I wouldn’t ring a nurse regrading this because it is more pharmaceutical in nature. I read that iodine deficiency is common with HF and some published studies have indicated that taking a supplement can be very beneficial. I live in France during the summer but when I am back in the UK I will maybe discuss it with my pharmacist who is pretty knowledgable. I was a Clinical Scientist before retiring so I do understand that you have to be careful about interactions between drugs and so on but I really appreciate your taking the time to reply. I was just hoping that somebody had some experience with it, while I am whiling away my time in France!🤗

Iodine can mess up thyroid function.

Thanks for this. Yes,I am aware of the thyroid implications, but iodine deficiency is under diagnosed and can be regulated with supplements such as Kemp. Anyway, I will wait and try to find out more of the science behind the studies etc. I appreciate your reply nonetheless.

No I haven’t. I think that maybe I am taking enough each day without adding even another supplement. I would like to know if iodine is helpful though!
