I have just had a normal blood result 3 weeks after stopping statins as result of significant liver dysfunction. Liver function was normal before took atarvostatin - started on 80 mg & reduction to 20 mg showed continuing abnormality. GP now reluctant to put me back on statins & is looking for something else. Anyone else unable to tolerate statins & had to make a move?

Alternative to statins
The usual drug that is tried if there is an issue with statins is Ezetimibe. This works by reducing the absorption of cholesterol from food and bile juices. It is somewhat less effective than statins (which is why it is not first choice) but has less side effects. If this doesn't work or if you have really high cholesterol there are more 'exotic' drugs available.
Atorvastatin put my LFTs up, but I'm ok on simvastatin. Maybe worth trying a different statin if you haven't already done so.
Diet or statins are the choices
Hi I tried all the statins and alternatives but was unable to tolerate any of them. So gave up. I watch my diet and hope for the best. No good taking medication if it makes you feel awfull. Regards
I can't tolerate stains, they have put me on ezetimibe. X
Have you- or anyone else here- had side effects from ezetimibe? Also, I understand it is not as effective as statins - just an adjunctive treatment.
I ended up with a deranged Liver of 80 mg I am on none...
