Can Omeprezole cause Atrial Fibrillation?

I have had Atrial Fibrillation in the past and just over a year ago had a second successful Ablation.

I now find myself suffering from Helicobacter Pylori for which my Dr has prescribed two antibiotics plus Omeprezole. In the past I have had Lansprozole and Omeprezole both gave me Diarrhea, Lansprozole very severely. I have read on the web that these proton inhibitor drugs can cause A.Fib. Since I react badly to them I am worried about my A.Fib returning.

Does anyone have experience of this problem?

I had to stop ppis as my af was awful and ectopics too while taking them. I was encouraged to try them again towards the end of last year and lo and behold the arrhythmia and ectopics got worse so I have stopped them. There was a mention of them causing lowering of magnesium in the body which isn't helpful for us with afib.

Whether there is true scientific evidence I don't know and can only give you my experience. I personally will not take them again, I emphasise I am not medically trained just offering my own personal experience.

If you are having lots of diarrhoea while on them and loosing electrolytes through it then again the important electrolytes including potassium and magnesium amongst others may be culprits. Have a word with your doctor and pharmacist. Best wishes.

Thanks for advice

The only connection between omeprazole and AFib is that long term use of omeprazole can reduce your magnesium level thus stirring up AFib. You can take magnesium supplements but make sure they are not taken together, space of at least 2 hours apart

Not sure if they affected me in that way to the same extent, but I did stop taking Lanzoprezole as it apparently along with other ppi's, hinders the absorption of magnesium which isn't good. I tend to find that magnesium supplements ease my AFib and ectopics.

Thank you Goldfish and to all of you who responded. I am happy to tell you on this occasion the omeprezole has not had the same degree of troubling side effects and with only a day to go before they end I have been fine.

I did however learn much about magnesium and potassium from you all and will bear it in mind for the future
