Post HA I was on 2mg Ramipril then the cardiologist suggested this was upped to 5mg. Then I had a TIA and it was upped to 10mg. My blood pressure has been pretty good since but my recent annual cardio clinic “MOT” showed my systolic is ideal, but the diastolic is still a little high. I can’t go on any more Ramipril but my GP has suggested I now go onto Amlodipine alongside the ramipril.
I’m presuming there will be others in this situation and just curious if any side effects / Issues etc? I get no side effects from my other meds so hopefully that continues.
Much appreciated.

I was the other way round- Amlodipine at first then Ramipril (2.5mg ) was added . The combination has worked very well for me and I was on it for many years. My GP took me off the amlodipine in April this year because my dosage of Bisoprolol was increased and she was concerned that my blood pressure would become too low.
The only side effect I had was fluid retention in my ankles , which I was told was common with amlodipine . But it worked and it was never considered an issue. Since I've come off it, I don't get the swollen ankles .
Of course we're all different. I wish you all the best and hope it works for you 🐰
You're welcome. It was intermittent , and never a problem- apart from the fact that there were times when I couldn't wear my favourite Chelsea boots 😁I hope it all works well for you🐰
Hi, I've been on 10mg of each for the last 20 years, controlled BP very well and no side effects. If you spot me on other posts I did have heart attack in April but that was plaque rupture so don't think I can blame the Ramipril or Amlodopine..
I’m taking 10mg amlodopine and 5mg ramipril and they seem to control my blood pressure quite well. No side effects except for slight swelling of my left ankle. I’m pleased. I don’t want high blood pressure.
Hi, I am on 5mg of both and bp is fine. The hospital raised Amlodipine to 10 mg after I had angiogram as bp was high( understandable as I was worried) but ankles and lower legs had swelling so Dr reduced it back to 5mg checked bp over two weeks and all fine since.
Hello, ROBBO36. Amlodipine was my first ever hypertension medication. It was put up to 10 mg, but then down to 5 mg, a day, then stopped, because of occasional chest pains, swollen ankles and feet, plus feeling rough. It did not control the hypertension well. After my heart bypass op the cardiologists considered putting me on it, but I assertively had to say "No" to that.
Hi Robbo36, as you can see , we all have differing stories regards BP medication, so from the outset its important to remain focused on you and your issue and your solution. You will read good and bad regards BP meds, as its often a case of MUCH trial and error by GP or cardiologist to find the correct medication and dosage to suit you. Many take months to get this in place and have to live with short term side effects to get there. My GP has been prescribing Amlodipine (first ) and then Ramipril in all combinations but so far no real success. Ramipril (5 mg) bought on a cough so we stopped that, but Amlodipine (7.5mg) bought on racing pulse and "flutters" (using the word palpitations worries me!! ). Some tolerate both very well, some have issues with one or both meds, so again its between you and GP to find the ideal solution. I have had to re start Bisoprolol 1.5mg to counteract the Amlodipine and I have written to GP saying that I want to find an alternative to Amlodipine that doesnt need another tablet to solve it side effects. I am awaiting his response but will be chasing him soon to get himself into gear! Its crazy that i feel so much better OFF the meds than on. So far I have EITHER lowered BP but suffered racing heart / flutters, or removed flutters and racing heart but had increase in BP. As you can see, it is trial and error, but GP's do seem fixated on Amlodipine and Ramipril as their "go to" front line. Might be for good reason, but keep the focus about you and your health. Hope you get sorted soon.
My GP changed me from Amalodipine to Doxasosin because Amalodipine was making my feet and ankles swell badly and it was a known side effect. moderately successful but am now wearing compression stockings!
Hi Robbie I was on both , but after 4 months it was decided to swap the amlodapine, I was having muscle cramps and joint pain in joints I didn't even know I had , I was changed to 20mg lercandipine with the ramipril . And all pains went away . Only been swapped a month but all OK so far xx good luck
