Do I need to take ramipril

I had an angina attack 2+weeks ago and have been prescribed ramipril, which I understand is for high blood pressure. I do not have high blood pressure and never had it is usually on the low side.

So I can’t understand why Ihave been prescribed it, am I missing something?

You should discuss it with your doctor.

Thanks jimmyq. I have discussed it with my doctor and just been told the hospital says to prescribe it. It does not make any sense!

Looked it up: Ramipril relaxes blood vessels which will, hopefully, stop you having any more angina attacks. Really, you need to find out why you had the angina attack before you can make a decision on your treatment.

I used to have angina but that was because I had high BP due to blocked arteries. I have gone on a diet to clear them out before agreeing with my doctors about coming off medication. I am down to 1, Clopidogrel, to make my blood less sticky.

beware of ramipril side effects and get your Potassium levels checked after 2 weeks.

Hello and welcome to the forum. As said it lowers BP and the associated risk of further angina attacks. The real question is what your normal blood pressure was? The guideline figures for a healthy person are lowered in the presence of other issues such as CVD (frequent cause of angina), diabetes, etc.

Hi Ollie. Ramipril is an ACE Inhibitor (Angiotensin-converting-enzyme). This is an enzyme that contracts your blood vessels. Ramipril inhibits this enzyme and dilates them. This lowers your blood pressure and also means that oxygenated blood can flow more easily through your heart and elsewhere so it reduces the chance of further Angina or heart attacks. That’s why the Docs try to maximise the dose. Hope that helps. I’ve got low blood pressure too and have been on them for 2+ years - with no issues or further episodes.
